GitHub is planning to charge for self-hosted runners starting March 1, 2026
GitHub is sending out a newsletter to all users that self-hosted action runners will be charged with $0.002 per minute.

This won't affect public repos, but now for your private repos you'll be paying for your self hosted build server + $0.002 per build minute

GGWP!
Charging for self hosted runners? wat?
What if you don't selfhost?
You also get charged and it costs much more than .002
2026 already sounds like a great year /s
Can't wait
crazy, using my machine giving money to ms
Crazy!!
Hopefully this will be the push to get more people to self host their git repos using any of the myriad of free options. As a plus, their private source code won't be being used to train other people's code-gen AI models.
what? had it will be trained even in the private repo?damn
Microsoft assure that of course, no, they wouldn't dream of doing that.
But then, look what else Microsoft are doing with AI and your private data.
Haha wild
WTF? Too early for the 1 of April! 😵💫
Are they scraping for pennies or scraping for personal information through a payment?
People are angry about penny pitching but it's most likely to discourage people using third party runners.
They made their cloud runners cheaper and competitors more expensive.
I doubt they care about the money they make from this, it's about killing the emerging runners-as-a-service companies.
WTF?!!
Chargeback yesterday and go Gitlab.
Got this email too and now i know why i selfhost with Gitea and DroneCI. Classic Microsoft move.
They got bullied into postponing https://x.com/i/status/2001372894882918548
Does this affect GitHub Pages websites?
TIL that GitHub supports self-hosted runners, and that I will never consider using them.
This is why we can't have nice things
All hail Big Corp 🤣
Good thing we have all these VPSes we can run CI on, right?
Hope the postponing is just corpo words for we won't do it.
Shame on you for even thinking about that. We only idle them.
Wow they want to charge us the privilege of not using their compute ressources? What logic is that.
Thankfully i don't need it right now, but latter, I will not be in github...
I completely understand them. If you have private repos, you’re not sharing what it is that you make. Self-host Git, or if not, pay what GitHub asks. They provide tons of shit for free. It takes resources anyway, even if you self host or use another running service.
Why is it expected that you should be able to keep your stuff private, use a free services resources, and for the part they charge for, use a third party?
I dislike Microsoft practices as much as anyone but this isn’t what to complain about IMO.
Edit: I use GitHub for private repos and they charge for it. Very small amounts though. If anything is wrong with GitHub runners its that they’re fucking slow as fuck.
Enshittification
Stop Paying per Minute for GitHub Actions: How to Host Your Own CI/CD Runners on a €5 VPS
The self-hosted charge was crazy, but yeah companies shouldn't put their private repos on github anyway. Gitea (or Forgejo, or Gitlab) are all amazing and free. Self-host your private repo and put it behind a VPN for added safety
So AI even the image is AI
