Are the SYS and KS servers from OVH good?”

So far I’ve been using the RISE type for 2 years and it has been working quite well.
I’m planning to buy an SYS or KS. Are the SYS and KS servers from OVH good?

As far as I understand, they are just the older generations given a second lease of life at a lower price point?

  • Yes.

I had a KS-A for nearly a decade. Never had a single problem, not even a single power outage in all that time. The uptime got over 3 years at one point as life got in the way and I forgot to apt update and reboot it.

Replaced that when I got a bigger KS-LET-1 about 3 years ago. The older one with smaller HDD. Still going strong, no issues with that either except a PSU failed once and they'd replaced it within the hour.

KS is just their ultra cheap budget line. Every few years, they shift stuff down a tier from the higher tiers and the KS line just collects the old hardware that they can't charge a premium for anymore but is still good enough for most people.

  • 11 bucks for a media server with an igpu and unmetered network, definitely worth it.

  • I’ve had a KS-5 for about a year. Great latency and no downtime. Even had their DDoS mitigation kick in when someone decided to hit our DNS unexpectedly. Worked great.

  • KS line doesn’t have VRack, but SYS does. I would stick to the SYS line if that’s important to you.

  • Regular KS line is good, limited editions (upgraded LE-B, upgraded Mystery) exceptionaly good. KS line only negative point is the 500 Mbps upload.
SYS line is good too with the basic 1 Gbps and sometimes extra addons discounted too (RAM, NVMe).

KS line is the absolute winner of the low-end market in the EU since got 300 and 500 Mbps network. 100 Mbps was unserious a little in 2024.

  • It depends on what you need or want, of course. In my case, I've shifted most of my non-critical or non-horsepower focused loads to the KS and SYS line. I don't care if they're not redlining since they're comparably cheap. They work great, are generally very reliable and OVH support is OK as long as you know what you're doing. (They won't help you with "you" problems.)

For raw horsepower/memory/storage applications, I've personally found better and more customizable deals with other LET providers than OVH.
