Dude, shouldn't he be called VPS-rich, not me?

i mean, we know he isn't shopping for himself but is rather a gateway for mjjs that cannot pay overseas...

Hadn't thought of that possibility. Or, he might just be reselling. Even if not that, he could just be doing affiliate. RackNerd affiliate is great btw, you get a good percentage of every sales, and the best part is those are recurring. So, every year when your affiliate renews their VPS, you get a cut.

i think, he wouldn't be asking for double bandwidth if he was just doing affiliate, cause then he wouldn't know all those invoice numbers.. unless he such a good guy, same as @dustinc - he says, buy thru my aff link, and i will get you double bandwidth if you drop your invoice number in my mail.. =)

Yah, infact, Dustin himself recommended me to do that an year or so ago. You post your affiliate link, someone buys with it and post their order number on a forum, TG group or something else. The person, eg.- yangyang then posts these order numbers on this thread. Win-win-win.

He might also be doing it to win a big prize, converting that into RN credit, and then when he resells in the future, that gets converted into actual cash for him.

Oh kinda like I have been doing with my credits. But, I guess he is looking forward to winning the lottery not the social butterfly cause to get into top 6 on social butterfly, he should be aware that just posting order numbers might not cut it.

Don't you say things like that. All of my spam was very engaging. It all counts.

Lol! I am just saying that he is probably well aware by now that just posting order numbers without engaging in the thread, he can't possibly win anything on the social butterfly prize epool. So he might be looking for luck in the lottery on Dec 12.

BTW, what are you aiming for in the prize pool? Need to know if someone's coming for me

I have no idea, I've not even read the list. I just figured if I make top 10 then there'll be some RN credits available.

I've no idea about the lottery. I watched the video about the wheel thing and only one order and that sounded too complicated I didn't even bother trying to understand it.

There are 2 major giveaways on the thread. Social butterfly is engagement based and the other one Iis lottery where each person who commented on the thread gets 1 entry each and the lottery is drawn on Dec 12. You can check the prize pool for both on the main thread page.

Do you have some sort of consumer regulatory agency in your country for banks? Maybe you could file a complaint with them.

I suggested the same, but since it's only 10 euros that's on hold, he said it isn't worth it

yeah, too much time and work for just €10

But, david did suggest that sometimes regulatory agency might be able to get your PP account reinstated which would be much better. Imo too it's a good option to consider given the process is not very cumbersome and time consuming

Also, Bas, what Ryzen APU did you say you own?

    *CPU

    Ryzen 9 7900 (with iGPU)!

What's your review of it for gaming?

I really like it. Way faster than my laptop hahaha!
But a dedicated GPU would probably be better for most games.
But since I only play minecraft (and stream that), my iGPU is pretty good. I can get like 100+ fps without shaders. But I usually limit it to 30-60 fps as I don't need more

My friend has an offer on a 7900X with 5070Ti. I am caught in a dilemma here cause the seller doesn't know about the price inflation and is ready to sell way below the current market. My friend needed to know if a 7900X is good. Now, I am unsure if I should tell him or not cause the poor seller would suffer

The seller probably doesn't care and probably has already bought and fitted the replacement CPU so he's not left without a working PC.

Also your friend is more important than some random anonymous seller.

Yup, true. But, what is the seller's selling due to an emergency or something? That would be exploitation in the case, right?
Anyways, I just informed him the APU is good and requested him not to give any updates regarding the sale happening or not.

i do not discard the possibility. he could even be living in USA, UK, Canada or any other non-Chinese territory.. others are doing it too after seeing his success.. MJJs are very resourceful..

Yah, makes sense. MJJs are definitely keeping many hosts afloat. I am just thinking of this possibility, which obviously sounds foolish. Correct me if I am wrong. Is it possible to chain multiple VPSes, like all their resources including the CPU, RAM and storage in such a way to enable them to train AI or something and also make sure that no single VPS is using 100% of all resources at a time?
Since AI is big in China and elswhere as well, but, mainly in China, coudl that be a thing? I have no idea if what I mentioned just now is evena possibility though.

i don't think so, vCPUs are weak AF.. dedis would be much cheaper.

I think the vast majority of Chinese buying RN deals are just hoping to use it as a VPN, and LA has pretty decent routes to China. Having an IP each is a bigger advantage than having a decent CPU because the firewall only blocks a single IP based on traffic it thinks is bad.

This prolly is it. BTW, I posted about a possibility to bchot..being a noob inam not sure if that's possible, but could they somehow be coupling all the resources on these VPSes to train ai models or something?
I am not even sure if coupling the resources - RAM, CPU, storage and other stuff on remote VPSes is a possibility though. I am curious.

It's not worth it. The hardware RN uses is basically junk. 10-15 year old E5s, probably got cheap as the rejects from ColoCrossing.

When I say junk, that's a bit unfair. They'll be 40-80 core things, and so they're decently able to support 200 VPS doing lightweight web serving, but for actual compute they're miles behind modern CPUs. A decent current AMD desktop-class CPU would be far better for compute than one of these. And all of the AI training is done on GPU-class hardware, because they have in the order of 10x-100x more raw compute than CPUs, just because they have so much parallelism.

It'll just be people using them for VPNs or running a relatively low-traffic website.

Oh yah, I had completely forgotten about the GPU requirement for most AI training. But, anyways, what I said is technically possible though? Like you could chain multiple VPSes say better Ryzen VPSes to achieve something of the sorts I mentioned? If yes how's that be done. Just give me some keywords to search for the process..don't wanna trouble you.

There's no magic bullet. Whatever you're running would need to be designed to support multi-computer distribution.

Years ago (maybe 20?) people were obsessed with "beowulf clusters", but nobody's bothered with that for years because multi-CPU motherboards and CPUs with hundred of cores now means that communication between threads is lightning fast. Outside of supercomputers (where you'd be talking 100-500+ processors) nobody has the need for this much CPU power.

That number might not be very far off since ha already has 626 comments on doubling requests. Assuming he has a few multiples within a single comment, 1000 is a good guess, I mean 1000 only bought this year from RN!

YANGYANG IS THE KING OF VPSES!

I can categorically state Yangyang does not have any posts requesting more than server to be doubled per post. My re-education campaign had no effect.

Lol! BTW, on an unrelated note, went to the barber today who educated me on the huge gaps on my scalp. Seems like I will be joining you sooner than later.

In that case, welcome to the smooth scalp club!

Thank you, buddy. If you can kindly share some products for a perfect beard. I am gonna refocus all my energy and testosterone from my scalp to my beard now

Honestly, I do very little with my beard.

When I first started my smooth scalp adventures, I felt like my beard was super important, so I got some fancy cream that allows you to style it a bit and stay glossy looking. That's kind of useful if the beard is above about 1.5-2cm long.

If you keep the beard shorter, I think 0.8-1.2cm is about optimal, then you don't actually need anything to keep the beard looking neat.

Although you don't want to be disturbing it too much as that weakens the hair folicles. I wash mine in the shower a couple of times a week rather than every time I shower.

The other big mistake beginners make is shaving too much from their neck. Most beards look best if they extend down under the chin and stop about a finger width above the adam's apple. So covering a lot more neck than you'd think you should at first.

Thanks for that. Yes, I am trynna go full Viking. But, there's an issue. I grew mine though patchy about 5cm long and it started itching like crazy. Tried a moisturising cream which made it a bit better though.
I am concerned for going full Viking. If I am physically capable of going full Viking, I am not sure yet, I'd probably braid it

Yeah, the itchy phase goes away if you go longer still. It's just when the hairs are an annoying length between about 3-5cm where they're long and spiky, but short enough that they resist bending much. Once they're longer, it becomes a lot more like thick hair instead, albeit more wirey than hair.

Thought so as well..I got this idea when i saw yangyang buy multiple of these VPSes. I have weird ideas from time to time and I convince myself they are great

Oh got it. BTW, what's the maximum length you have grown your beard to?

Lots of people buy to upgrade and then sell the old CPU because they don't need two PCs and having the cash is useful to fund the next upgrade.

If they're still getting 50% of the price of their new CPU, they probably already budgetted in that cost. If they don't realise their old CPU is now worth the same as the upgraded one they bought last month, that's kind of on them. But also, they've already made the calculation to sell, so it is what it is.

Guess I shouldn't be feeling guilty for someone else's lack of research then. Yah, I am just gonna let it go. To happier thoughts

  • Hello, I would like to double my bandwidth.
    Invoice #19571474
    Thanks!

  • Years ago, I used to buy 8-bit computers on e-bay. For one specific model, I used to pay £30+ for just the computer without monitor, and the monitors were £20+ more depending on the condition.

I remember once winning an auction for £10 for computer plus monitor, all in original boxes (used, but beautiful condition). The reason it sold so cheaply was it was collection only (which I understand as posting the monitors is an ordeal). When I went to collect, I didn't realise what a steal I'd got until I saw it. I insisted on giving them £20 for it (all the cash I had), but they were a bit uncomfortable taking more because they'd already got what they thought was fair market price for a 30-year-old piece of junk. And in a sense they had, because ebay reflects the price the market is prepared to pay, and collection only limited their potential purchasers to basically just me (and I drove 50 miles each way to collect it, so spending more on fuel than the cost of it).

Yangyang must have thousands of VPSs by now!

At one point, it was about 15cm long as I didn't cut it for the 2 whole years of lockdown when I saw almost nobody. I used to brush it out to the side for comedic photos. To be honest, I looked like a bit of an idiot.

    that he do..

Dude, shouldn't he be called VPS-rich, not me?

He's almost certainly acting as a purchaser proxy for some Chinese forum. It's hard to get past KYC and also even to pay in a currency other than RMB, so he's probably just reselling / transferring those accounts as soon as they're created.

What's interesting is that he's done so many now that even assuming $11 for the most basic RN server, it's well into the territory where currency export limits apply for an individual.

Or, could it just be that he is posting his affiliates' order number? From what I have heard you cannot transfer a RackNerd offer special VPS

    oh really?

Yah, that seems to be what's going on

There used to be another guy constantly posting double bandwidth requests (or maybe it was the same guy, not sure), but Dustin eventually asked to have each customer post the request themselves, as it seemed the orders were all for different people. But maybe it's a losing proposition, and he finally relented. Anyway, it's a lot of business.

8-bit? Isn't that equivalent to the NES?
