So I bought a switch 2 today, rather this evening... A friend broke hers and knows I wanted a switch 2 but couldn't justify it to myself since I have an oled and there's not many switch 2 exclusives yet so she offered to pay half the switch 2 mario kart bundle and the official microsd express card if I gave (technically sell) her my oled. It's taking forever to download all my games/dlc that automatically triggered from the transfer option. I did end up buying a 512G card on amazon but it won't be here for a bit, hopefully it's easy to migrate to a new card or easy to re-download some of the games (do plan on deleting the games/updates that require the card first). I almost filled up one of the 256G storage

I am confused. Did you buy a broken Switch 2 from your friend?

I owned a switch oled, friend had a first gen switch (which broke). I basically sold mine to get the new one. Will be interesting with the battery life though since I believe it's less with the more demanding games

Oh I see. How is it BTW? I have heard it has beefier specs than the original Switch. Wonder if Dev's can get Android or maybe some form of Linux running on it. Pretty sure it could then run some PC games on it, in which case, it would be a great device to own.
BTW, does switch 2 have worse battery over 1?

I'dunno on battery life yet as I just got it and have it on the charger since it's downloading all my games/dlc/etc. Definitely more powerful than the previous gen and I've read the battery life varies depending on how demanding the game is. Kind of like the PC handhelds if you're not streaming from some other PC

BTW, does the Switch have other official ports except RDR and Crysis?

They do, they've actually have been more open to ports and "more mature" games since they released the first switch.

Oh, didn't know this. I do love the OLED Switch though, cause I love tinkering a lot. On a Deck or an Ally everything comes prepared since they run both Windows or Linux out of the box. I don't want that. I love to play with the device, not games, but, learn dev stuff. That's where the enjoyment is for me.

You can install windows on the deck if you want to, valve even provides official drivers. But honestly, why would you want to since it takes a performance hit (linux, especially steam os, is way more optimized). I mean, I can see some folks that want to play games that install malware like drm/anti-cheat that lives on even if you uninstall the game. You can uninstall it if you want/even know about it but it's a hassle. Honestly, that's the only reason why I have windows on gaming desktop. Install whatever there and all that stuff (microsoft included) will ever see me do is play games and maybe listen/watch a couple of things or read the news.

That and maybe some games that don't run on Linux at all, like Fortnite. I completely moved to Linux on my PC last year and haven't or won't think about moving back to Win as primary anytime soon. Wine is doing enough for me, but, I'd love to try Bazzite someday. Have been hearing great things about it.

yeah, anti-cheat that the developer/publishers refuses to work on making it more friendly with steam os/linux simply because there isn't really money in it for them. At least not yet...

Bazzite is a sense is basically just community version of steam os that supports way more hardware. I did wish Valve released their generic/diy version of steam os with an easy installer right before windows 10 end of life and did a little marketing/advertising that it can replace windows on the machines microsoft abandoned. I personally thing they could have got a huge increase in users and have more of a pull on publishers/studios to support linux.

Yes, being the first big corporate supported Gaming OS or one coming from a well-known company in the gaming industry, SteamOS had huge potential to prolly replace Windows even for gaming, even among hardcore Windows gamers.
Windows gamers just need to realise all the heavylifting going on with Proton, backed by Wine and others. Moreover, I strongly believe the gaming performance is much better on Linux than Windows. Am I right?

you really must like Nintendo.. for me Xbox ally will do good, as i do have an xbox . but it seems ally is more expensive, i remember spending $500 on the xbox like 3-4 years ago or so...

I have a xbox series x too, I even bought a fpga that can play games/consoles that could easily be emulated on my steam deck, pc, or even those check pirated handhelds you can buy in many stores/amazon. Heck, can even emulate switch 1 stuff on the deck easily. But it's not the same as using actual hardware and multiplayer with friends.

Yes, that's true. I don't have many friends who own Switch or for that matter any Nintendo gear. It's prolly cause Switches aren't officially sold in India and thus lack warranty.

Yeah, I have lots of friends and family with nintendo stuff so it's kind of a must. Do also have friends with PCs/other consoles too. Though I do like Nintedo's stuff, it's different compared to a xbox/ps/pc. PC is ahead of ps/xbox but one could argue they're basically the same where nintedo is kind of in their own lane. While I do like Nintendo, I'm not one of those blind fans, I know Nintendo does Nintendo things...

Nintendo is famous for suing websites and ROM holders. But, theyr aren't completely wrong there since it's their IP they are fighting for. I believe they also were able to shut down a Switch emulator project completely. I have used a Lite before and played RDR on it. Could say right away the game was well-polished and optimsied to run on Switch hardware, the first doesn't have the best sepcs.
I wish Nintendo would spend more on porting PC games.

Yeah, no comment on the rom sites :) They only "won" the emulator thing because they didn't have the money to fight them in court. Them also going after palworld and patenting things to get them is also stuff that falls into the "Nintendo doing Nintendo things" saying. While I'm not a fan of those type of games, after seeing the new pokemon games, I can see why they're going after palworld

OH yah, I had completely forgotten about the Palwordl fiasco. BTW, when it comes to emulators, what is their legal status? I mean, are emulators themselves illegal since they don't ship games with their software. I dunno how these work, but, I do assume the emulators do use a bit of proprietary Nintendo code to get the games running. Is that where the legal issue is?

Emulators themselves are legal, that's why with some of them, you have to source your own bios and there's usually instructions on how to do that from your own hardware. Similar with ripping your own games. They're also "clean room" which means they don't look at any proprietary code to make it work. That's why the Dolphin Emulator (gamecube and wii) is still around.

The reason why nintendo had a case against those devs is because they were showing/playing an unreleased game that leaked. Add that to the fact that it's nintendo's current gen console, it wasn't going to end well for them. It's actually why most folks in the emulation scene called it the forbidden fruit

Ah I see. Again, didn't know about the unreleased game leak. That, imo, was too bold of them to be showing off a leaked game from Nintendo on their emulator.
It is actually really interesting to see how these guys can circumvent Nintendo or for that matter, other companies' proprietary code completely to get these games and apps running like on the original device they were meant for. Wonder what would happen if these devs got together to build a community console with community games and such.

Yeah, there's no arguement that you were playing your own backup/rip of a legally purchased game when it wasn't even released. I believe they even went after some youtubers that were playing the game before the release too. I forget. I just know Nintendo really did Nintendo things when that happened but you can't really blame them. I mean they had "beyond a shadow of a doubt" proof that they were doing illegal things.

Oh yes, I agree. It's their IP and if not them, who would defend it. But, I think Palworld was a bit too much. I haven't seen the new Pokemon game though. So, can't judge based on the recent facts.
Btw, what happened of that though? Were they able to tone down the Pokemon-ness of Palworld?

100% them going after palworld is too much, even the generic patents they filed/got to go after them even harder. But like I said, watch the trailer for the new pokemon and watch one for palworld, I can see why Nintendo is doing Nintendo things. Though I'm not a fan of those type of games...

I know palworld had to change some things but I don't know where it went after that, I figured unless there's some major news that just appears, I'd give it some time before I looked into it again

Yah, me as well. I am not into Palworld kinda games. The ly time I considered it was to run a server, maybe monteise that. But the GPU requirement kept me away from it.
I guess it was just a viral one-time thingy that shot up to prominence and fell down harder. I don't see many people talking about it anymore. Moreover, Ig, the Nintendo case just added to their popularity for that short period.

Yeah, linux gaming performance is better, even with proton/wine and not just native linux ports. It's just a matter of time before these studios/publishers take Linux seriously instead of their "linux just enables cheaters" stance they have now since you know, there's no cheaters in theirs games...

It would happen sooner if folks just refused to play their games that can't be played on linux but lets be real, that's never going to happen. The folks that will refuse won't make enough of an impact and the others will just use windows or a console to play it. I'm actually in the same camp as that's why I have windows on my gaming desktop. I didn't install linux after my last reformat and told myself I will do it when valve releases an official diy steam os based on arch or when I upgrade my cpu/mb/ram (it's an i9-9900k). I am going Ryzen with the next upgrade unless intel releases some mind blowing thing by then (doubtful but you never know)

Yup, this is going to take a lot of time to change. It's still a common belief among many laymen Windows users that Linux is meant for advanced users. To an extent that's true, but, they should learn about the various distros meant for various kinds of users. My friends still think everything Linux is terminal-based. They still believe even installing a browser is a complicated process.
SteamOS changed a lot of that given how many people got the Steam Deck. They should have continued working on marketing Steam OS as a great replacement for Windows.
As for the studios, I think they should Target YouTubers if they want to promote Linux. Most of these games unavailable on Linux are multiplayer which get streamed like hell on YouTube. So, if viewers see streamers playing their favourite games on Linux, there's a good chance they will give it a try atleast.
There are already many videos showing performance boost that Linux gives Windows games. But, people are hesitant to move mainly because of the reasons I mentioned above

  • I mean just the fact that a stock Windows installation takes about 4GB RAM as idle when at the same time basic jwm on a Linux installation can be optimised to run on less than 400MB RAM should be incentive enough

  • KEEP THE HYPE UP, SQUAD! LETS REACH LUCKY 700 SOON!!

  • So I think I'm only using like 20G of the internal storage as it seems the switch 2 installed everything to the microsd express card first. So when my 512G card arrives like late next week, I should be able to just delete some of the updates/dlc for the game cards/carts that I own and move everything to the internal storage. That way I won't have to redownload everything again and only a few things. Might even just wait to redownload them until I actually want to play those games again

Am I right?

I'm hoping the steam machine is popular. Honestly, I might get one depending on the price as it will be nicer to leave that on and stream from it on my deck than my gaming pc. Besides actually playing on it in the living room.

I thinking the price of the steam machine is going to be $700 +/- $100 since they said it will be similar to a pc. If you glance for similar CPU mini PCs, they're like 500/600 and I'm guessing add like 100 for the GPU.

I almost filled up one of the 256G storage

you really must like Nintendo.. for me Xbox ally will do good, as i do have an xbox . but it seems ally is more expensive, i remember spending $500 on the xbox like 3-4 years ago or so...

Though I do agree on their pricing for the console and games but if you think other systems aren't going to do the same thing you're tricking yourself. I mean, look at their price increases they've done for hardware that's already made/in stores.

Oh yes. That's actually quite normal. I read this years ago. Sony was actually losing money on the PS4. Their PlayStation business was so designed to make them money on games and accessories rather than on the console itself. Some attributed the bad controller quality (stick drift, etc.) to this tactic so their accessories sale would icnrease.

console wars, baby! =) very well covered in South Park that year.. Sony give great banderu... =))

I guess you can do 5 comments in a minute. You get a warning on the 6th in a minute, right?

you get 2 minute timeout. i am not sure what happens if you fire off another 5 right as soon as you back in the game.. worth a try.. maybe a longer timeout?

I'dunno, never tried it. Honestly, I'd expect it would be the same thing. Another 2 minute time out. I did find out with this recent one (my 2nd ever), that if you try posting a comment before that 2 minutes is up, it resets the 2 minutes! I know because I waited for my system time to change by 2 minutes (doesn't display seconds) and it told me I was still timed out and wouldn't let me post after it changed another minute. That's when I left it for my clock to change by 3 minutes so I know I wouldn't reset the time out

No, the timeout is definitely 2 minutes each time. But, once you get enough of those, mods start noticing. Or so I have been told.
