originally a vast number of big retailer in USA decided that Christmas Season shopping should begin as soon as Thanksgiving is celebrated. That is why great sales would start right on the next day - which eventually became Black Friday.

Black Friday original term wasn't even related to shopping or Turkey day in general.. It was a term coined in Philadelphia during big traffic/crowds day of the next day after Thanksgiving. Initially of course term was first used during financial panic back in 19th century. They have many others, all day of week-related.

in USA they are trying to step away from the whole Christ thing in Christmas, calling it Xmas and implying that it is a holiday for all religions.. It is mostly commercial and just an exchange of gifts thing.
