  • This is probably a dumb question from a newbie me, but how do I mount isos in the dedicated server? I tried to mount an iso via the supermicro pink but apparently I do not have premissions to do so

You need to connect using the Java iKVM Viewer, or the Docker version someone posted on the previous page, and then use the Virtual Media menu to mount your ISO.

From my limited experience, you should use the netinstall variant or something like netboot.xyz. Using a large ISO will most likely fail because the transfer speed is very slow. If you get disconnected while your ISO is still mounted, something might get stuck the next time you try to connect again, and you'll need to open a ticket for them to fix it.

To add: Their support is also very helpful and very fast in my experience.

Fixed, seems like I needed an older version of Java for the IPMI to work. Colocrossing's Frank was very helpful and quick to assist, so far my experience with them has been generally excellent, apart from the minor hiccup during ordering earlier which was also resolved.

..ohh and I forgot to mention if you get HDD boxes, check how LVM is configured. By default it can be 100GB allocated to / so you will have to extend it to use 100% all hdd space - play around with lsblk and vgdisplay commands.

Or you can add your own partition, like /data, so you don't mess and fill up /.

I, actually, like LVM configured (initially) like this so you have MORE CONTROL on what you want to do. Kudos to CC guys!

    Great - thanks for that.
How do you get netboot.xyz into the docker image and does netboot pickup ip's correctly?

I think you just need to put your ISO inside the directory that you mounted as /app/vmedia/?

I actually haven't tried the Docker image myself. I mentioned it because it seems to work better for some people. I just used my Windows VPS that's close to the DC and installed the Java iKVM Viewer there.

First download Java 7 Version 79. Newer java versions dont wok.
Then go to supemicro control panel homepage you will see a console preview , if you click on it it will download the config file. Open it using java you will be connected and mount os make sure to use windows, on linux the mount virtual storage is grayed out. But, I will suggest you to reach out to support, they will install the os for you.

  • Support installed my custom OS for free, after struggling with the outdated IPMI. :) just in case others are struggling…

You can also connect using latest Java, but has a few extra steps.

    AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\deployment.properties
    Add: deployment.security.TLSv1=true

    Java\jre1.$VERSION\lib\security\java.security
    Remove TLSv1 from jdk.jar.disabledAlgorithms and jdk.tls.disabledAlgorithms

Open Java Control Panel - Security - Add https://$IPMI_IP to the Exception Site List

You can now launch the .jnlp file and mount the ISO (I recommend mounting netboot.xyz since regular installers won't boot, at least from my experience, due to network limitations seems like?)

A few more steps, but I personally don't want to deal with constantly installing or uninstalling older versions of Java.

I still recommend reverting all these changes after you're done installing.

And @ColoCrossing should update IPMI on these nodes before deployment. It's cheap, but quite crazy to see decade-old firmware versions.

Cool on the setup for the latest java, I actually have a VM that I created with the older java so I can do it since I was annoyed that it kept alerting me to update or actually forcing the update (think it was winget) on my little intel nuc windows box.

I've used netboot isos which booted fine (just super slow) though one time I tried RHEL (with the free developer license) and it basically refused, even after waiting forever for it to upload. I eventually got it but I had to create a kickstart file to handle everything (their automation for installing)

I grabbed one of the 4x1tb boxes as well, your disks are most likely setup as raid10 in the raid controller. Took a bit of tinkering but you can get the full 3.68tb if you so choose.
