Has ddps.jp Gone Dark? Looking for Updates on Their Operational Status

I am considering to move hosting to Asia.

I wanted a VPS in JP with following requirements:

  • 1-2 vCore (AMD Ryzen 9000 series or EPYC 9005 series VPS in Japan)
  • 40G NVMe
  • 750GB-1TB Bandwidth with minimum of 200 Mbit/s connection speed
  • 1 x IPv4 + 1 x /64 or /56 IPv6
  • KVM/XEN or better (full virtualization, not container‑based)
  • Must be by a company registered and operated domestically in Japan (data‑sovereignty requirements). (I will use the translation for support if necessary.).
  • Allow Port 25 (private email server hosting)

Use case: Hosting tech blog + private email server hosting.

I came to know of @ddps and was happy that they are on LET. Albeit, there is no communication from them.

I tried contacting them already (not sure if they are currently based in JP), they have mentioned 9900X in their VPS line-ups. It seems like they aren't available via email or Discord or here anymore.

Is the provider closing its business?

Is anyone here actively using their service?

  • Multiple people have tried to contact them, but no answer for months.

I actually had considered using them after they posted here, first ticket took 3 months to get a reply. I gave them benefit of doubt that it was overlooked, the same ticket has a reply waiting for over 1 month. You can take that as you wish, but obviously my suggestion is to avoid. [Edit: Of course this is just pre-sales, I have no experience with their support or quality of service]

  • In my experience, inquiries were answered the next day, and subsequent orders were processed immediately. I have never had any problems.
However, when I looked up this provider on X, I saw several complaints from customers who said they had been unable to get in touch for months and that their orders had not been accepted.
One of my gaming friends had been using DDPS before me, but they stopped using it this spring because they couldn't get in touch when placing an additional order.
Fortunately, I didn't have any issues, but I believe it's wise to exercise caution because their support system is underdeveloped.

  • it's very hard to deal with local Japanese provider, they may even don't accept your credit card, so many local rules, and i don't think they use powerful CPUs , most of their servers use weak CPUs

  • They didn't stop operating, but it was true that customer service orders and vps services were very slow to start up. I waited nearly a week before starting up.

  • @concept said: but no answer for months.

I mean, I tried every possible means to talk to them. What could be the reason for such behavior other than lack of interest in business?

@nagasaki_castella said: Fortunately, I didn't have any issues

Are you actively using their services? Their system/specs and stuff look good only. Just that their lack of response or interest in business looks concerning.

Even big players like Conoha by GMO group aren't willing to share information like benchmarks or CPU used etc. I had to miss their 74% discount on 3y deals because they didn't reply me properly about CPU/hardware or refund. I don't think JP based providers have issues with Credit Cards. I never had such issues.

Okay. I hope they will respond to my email one day.

I had a similar experience even with cat.net. I even asked a Japanese online friend to call them and ask if they still offer VPS, they told him they will check and get back. It has been weeks now already. No reply to my emails or call back to him till date.

i don't know why you insist on choosing a local Japanese provider, i wouldn't do that, i will resolve the " data‑sovereignty requirements " issue, and then find an international provider who has servers in Japan, that would make life a lot easier

  • @Tange said: international provider who has servers in Japan

Well, that's non-negotiable. I hope I find a good one, and I will definitely share my experience and review it here.

    Thank you!

Hostdzire, they're using Leaseweb, which has a Japanese subsidiary.

  • DDPS provided DDoS protection for Minecraft to Japanese users until around 2019–2020. Starting in 2020, they began offering VPS and dedicated servers in San Jose, Tokyo, and Osaka. I ordered an Osaka VPS around 2020. They used Cat Networks, but suffered frequent packet loss, and network issues were critical. The entire network would often go down due to DDoS attacks, yet they never changed upstream providers and largely ignored the problems. At one point, they even temporarily moved Japanese customers to San Jose (which made no sense). Their main support channel was Discord, but after about half a year of no contact, they left a ticket and deleted all General channels. They still claim they’re “under renewal.” I assumed they’d ghosted customers entirely during and after that period—but it turns out they’ve been quietly doing business via LET for the past one to two years, which is pretty funny.

Cat.net is same same but different :) I emailed them, asked a online friend from JP to call them. They said we will get back. Never did.

I think people from there have too much of business already?

@r3n said: At one point, they even temporarily moved Japanese customers to San Jose (which made no sense).

    This is unacceptable.

@r3n said: They still claim they’re “under renewal.”

Read the same in a lot of places.

It's both funny and baffling. The future operational status should be very clear, or they should stop taking ordering and running the e-commerce web-server part, admin panel for paying customers can stay for now.

  • I canceled also my service, no replay to the tickets. Service was good, running stable no downtime in 1 year but customer support 0

  • @cold said: Service was good

@cold said: but customer support 0

Both of these together is so baffling, isn't it? I am also told the service is good, which is why I am trying so much.

Do you have their phone number from invoices or anywhere? Maybe we can try calling them and ask.

    Hi r3n-san,

Yes, you are absolutely right regarding the difficulties we encountered during that period. This was primarily because there were no viable DDoS mitigation options in Osaka area and our Tokyo PoP wasn't available for VPS services at that time. We had zero control over the network infrastructure as well as physical control over those servers. The temporary migration to San Jose was an emergency measure to keep everything up, however, we completely agree that it was not an ideal experience for local users. At the end, we scaled our Tokyo PoP to migrate customers' services back to Japan later on.

We learned a lot from that era. Today, we no longer rely on third-party infrastructure. We now operate our own racks and network entirely in-house across 3 PoPs in Tokyo area, utilizing our own hardware and network upstream blends. This has allowed us to achieve the high availability and stability that our current customers are seeing.

To everyone who has tried to reach us for service inquiries in this year, we would like to sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.

We do agree that our customer support team has stayed quite occupied with helping current clients. They remain short-handed at the moment because of the high demand. We agree that, given the circumstances, we should have placed a stop sign for new orders/sales and inquiries to prevent these delays.

In order to prevent this issue, we’ve recently hired a new staff member and will be hiring more to accommodate the demands and significantly improve our response times. We have started looking into the past service inquiries recently as well. In addition to that, we will be restarting our social media once it settled down to make our services more transparent with up-to-date information, just like what we used to do.

We’re offering a risk-free, long-term (multi-month) trial to anyone affected by this, or former clients like r3n-san. Supplies are limited, so please let us know if you're interested

Is ddps.jp still registered and operated domestically in Japan?

Yes, we are a registered company based in Osaka, Japan. We operate as a Notified Telecommunications Carrier, which is a mandatory status under Japan's Telecommunications Business Act for any provider owning infrastructure in Japan to offer VPS, network services and more. We are fully compliant with these local regulations.
