Hehe, time to switch to my actual laptop as my chromebook is saying there's an update and it needs to restart. Might as well make sure everything else is update too (android and my linux container)

You use a cromebook? I only heard about those being used for schools around here? Are they used more commonly as general compute devices elsewhere? Neat... What are its specs?

I mainly use it as a machine I can throw in a backpack when I leave the house and I'm on call since I won't care as much if it's broken/stolen. Besides ChromeOS, there is Android and a Linux container so you can do much more than just a browser on these things.

I got a Thinkpad C14 on a closeout sale a couple years ago, it's a 12th gen i5 with 8G ram (sadly soldered to the board). I forget the nvme size it came with but I upgraded it to 1TB.

I did decide this year I will try using my chromebook so i can keep it next to my actual laptop but keep the thread open and I can hit refresh from time to time

I mean thats fair... I would be devestated if my laptop was stolen, its my best machine, but only by a little, as it has a ever so slightly more powerful cpu

that's how I would feel with my regular laptop. Work laptop, I mean, I wouldn't be devestated but I would feel bad. Honestly, if > @DaDeveloper said:

and oh, there is also a steam client for chrome os (I believe it is its own container)

I thought they were shutting down steam for chromebook for good? https://gamerant.com/steam-shutting-down-chromebook-beta-when/

Yeah, I read that which it will be interesting once it's actually shutdown/disabled. Though one can always enable the gpu acceleration flag for the linux container and install it that way.

I mean then yea its kinda pointless for them to maintain a niche version if you can use the general linux version

yeah, I don't blame them at all. Honestly, I think that was their testing ground for the gpu acceleration as more folks would be like "oh hey, I can play some steam on my chromebook!" instead of enabling the flag, using a shell to install steam, and then playing steam games

What games can you even play on a chrome book, I am under the impression that even the most high dollar chrome books are still a poor deal when it comes to performance per dollar/other currency

well, android works great on it, even on intel machines (there was an issue for a long time where some games on x86_64 machines were laggy/buggy) but steam wise, it varied on wine/proton support and the machine you're using. Though older games generally were flawless. Obviously you weren't going to be playing some new AAA title on ultra

Can you sideload old APK'es of things like angrybirds and stuff to play on a chromebook? That sounds like fun and a blast from the past

  • Ok, wow that looks pretty badass... I may check it out later, is it very time intensive to play?

  • @DaDeveloper said:
Is it closer to something like SIM CITY or things like Skylines?

it's circular, so it's quite unique. i actually haven't played Skylines yet, although I have it in my steam wishlist. i try to buy games when they go on sale.. like now.. just got Ubisoft email saying most of their stuff is up to 90% off for BFCM, but I already have all the Settlers I ever wanted.. played very 1st Settlers as SERFCITY back in 90-s..

ooo, it's one where it says "your system is applying a criticial update." I wonder what fun things it patched!

I wonder what CVE it is patching? Does it have a security disclosure anywhere?

    https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/

Thank you for sending me this, I did not know that there was a website for it, now I have another place to track for my list of things to update family about updating devices... My aunt bought her daughter a chromebook for school

Nice, they're definetly a limited device compared to a normal laptop unless you flash a different bios (only x86_64 supports it). Though it is great if you want something secure with a browser, android, and a little linux container. Honestly think once google merges the two platforms, android only tablets are going to suffer compared to the 2in1 chromebooks unless they also give the desktop browser version/chromeos

  • @DaDeveloper said:

yeah.. I lost 1 game and then won on the 2nd attempt (on medium setting). Steam says i've spent 39 hours on it..

  • I also got THE REMASTERED "COMMAND & CONQUER" LOL in 4k no less. also from the 90s.. I used to be the best in my city with it.. Used to beat everyone and anyone on my 14400 modem.. LOL.. that was the times.. I would rush their harvester with my NOD bikes and thus get a big advantage.. usually then just go and destroy them after...

I am getting into retro gaming partly because I dont have that nice gaming rig in my hands YET... so I am stuck to a certain lets call it threshold of games that dont need stellar specs to run

yep, can sideload. Only thing is it's still only android 13 on the stable chromeos channel. I was on their beta channel for a long time but but bug like year ago prevented me from launching my work VDI that I switched back to the stable channel. Now, our VDIs are on azure so I can either use the android windows app or I can just use the web browser url (windows app is better as it can capture hotkeys like alt+tab where the browser doesn't) so I've been thinking about switching back to the beta channel.

  • Settlers is great. whole series. Except the last 1 - NEW ALLIES - they made it so that console players could also play, so it is kinda lacking the edge it used to have, plus instead of usual ways they adopted the "short-time-bonus" kinda methods, which is more in the tune of new games.. annoying, to say the least..

I also really tried to finish FALLOUT (the very first one), but is it so convoluted, basically got stuck somewhere and stopped..

Fallout, Fallout2, C&C, some other titles i've bought for ~$2 each.. just by playing the waiting game.. put it in the Steam wish list, and it will tell you when it's time to buy it dirt cheap ..

  • Well guys... aparently the reason cloudflare went down was because they used Rust's .unwrap() function in production XD... I mean Rust is good if you use it right, but you need to do things right and actually vet and stress test before sending things into PROD

I want to get all of the old fallout games, but I will NOT buy from steam, I will get from sites like GOG.com, much better and I can save a installer offline and not need an account signed in and to deal with DRM

buying from Steam you actually get a proven to work on any rig version.. you know what i mean? no need for DosBox or some other stuff. no need to worry about emulators or anything at all.
