Looking for cheaper storage-VPS alternatives to Contabo

Hi everyone,

I’m searching for a storage-optimized VPS (or a VPS + block storage) with specs similar to Contabo’s Storage VPS plans, but ideally cheaper or with a better €/GB ratio. To give you some context:

Contabo’s Storage VPS (for example, their “Storage 10”) has 4 GB RAM + 300 GB SSD (or more with higher plans).

Their larger plans go up to 1 TB SSD for fairly low monthly prices.

What I need:

  • Large storage space (at least a few hundred GB, SSD preferred or “fast enough” storage)

  • A modest amount of CPU / vCores (doesn’t need to be super powerful)

  • Some RAM — enough for basic services, to host some docker app

  • Good network reliability

  • Affordable traffic / decent bandwidth

  • Low monthly cost — ideally lower than or competitive with Contabo’s storage plans

My questions to you:

Which VPS providers (especially on LowEndTalk) offer cheap storage VPS or VPS + block storage that might beat Contabo in value?

Is it better to go with a VPS + attachable block volume (e.g. Hetzner, DigitalOcean, Vultr) rather than a “pure” storage VPS?

What trade-offs should I watch out for — like IOPS, latency, bandwidth caps, or oversubscription — with these cheaper storage-oriented setups?

Thanks in advance for any recommendations or experiences you can share!

“pure” storage VPS should be cheaper.

  • Not technically storage but look at Netcup, especially when they double the storage on month end specials.

  • If you're looking for pure storage, my stuff is with @layer7 . Super happy and a stand up guy. Also consider @servarica_hani .

  • I am with two providers.

    Hostc
    And layer7.

Both are very stable and cheap.

Layer7 still has some $5 for 5TB per month left I think.

Your filters could be more convenient:

    • Location in particular: being able to select a whole region (such as UK instead of one of the three sub-areas) would be useful. Being able to pick an individual area can be useful too, so don't drop on in favour of the other.
    • Being able to set a range of storage size like you do with the price range.

More flexible filtering can be a larger hit on whatever DB you are using (this sort of thing leads to kitchen-sink queries that query planners have trouble generating efficient plans for if you aren't careful) but I doubt you are going to have enough data for that to be an issue (small enough that it won't matter if it all gets scanned every time, in fact the core data likely fits in a couple of data pages, so the engine won't bother using indexes anyway as that would be less efficient than just a few pages directly).

  • Another vote for @layer7 - pricing for their NVME storage is pretty good.

Have you looked at the title?

    It says alternative to "Cobtabo".

You not mentioning their cpu steal.

Great suggestion, thanks! I considered this issue at the time and made several revisions. I've already optimized this aspect.
Some regions may not display products because they haven't been added yet or are temporarily unavailable in that area! It's sufficient for non-massive-scale scenarios.

Hello, I have seen the plan that @layer7 offer and I am interested, but the second disk starts at 5TB of storage. Could I ask you for a customized plan to have 1TB instead of 5?

You just try Epyc or Xeon VPS with 2nd disk.
Xeon VPS is the same price as Storage VPS

    Hi,

we have currently no discounts and thanks to the rise of hardware pricings there wont be any discounts for quiet some time. The question is currently more if its necessary to raise prices for new contracts and not if they will be discounted.

So what we can offer is unfortunately limited to what you can see on our website:

    https://layer7.net/cloud-server

There you can also read about IO Limits and other restrictions / features.

You can also sign up for a testing account ( while we have currently quiet some backlog with that, so it will take some days ).

In general i am open to make special discounts even in this situation, but then things must be a bit more beefy than taking the absolute minimum of storage ( 1 TB ) ;-)

So all in all my suggestion to you is:

Wait for black friday and just hope that some reliable hoster with some years of history will be brave enough to offer some storage stuff and that it will be available with enough stock so you can catch something nice.

If that does not work, then you will have to face the harsh reality that things currently cost more than it was last year or even last quater....

    Good luck!

    It wasn't the OP.

And while somewhat off-topic it didn't derail the thread, so calm your arse.

You completely missed the point. "Contabo" was in the quotes for a reason.

Damn I'm glad I got in when I did, still extremely satisfied with everything and if NAND is gonna moon as much as some say there'll be no SSDs for me in a long time.
