Need Compute for Short Term

randvegetarandvegeta Member, Host Rep

Hello fellow providers.

We are working a project that is somewhat short term (2-3 weeks) and require as much compute power as we can get our hands on, as quickly as possible.

If you are a provider and have machines that are undeployed, and want to make some cash, for any machine that is even remotely powerful, I'd love be be able to rent it off you.

Unfortunately, my budget does not allow to offer "market rate" for the server rentals. However, my requirements are only that the CPU is powerful, and everything else can be fairly minimal. Bandwidth requirements are minimal and so too are all other hardware requirements.

Location also does not matter. As such, our proposal is to offer to buy as much compute power that may otherwise be sitting idle, but not impose any obligation on you as to making the server available for any fixed period of time. We propose to pay for our usage. Meaning, if you're a provider and have servers NOT generating cash, why not sell to us. You're guaranteed to make something while not reducing your available resources for regular sales.

Let's say you have stock of 10 Epyc 7B13 servers just sitting there, not doing anything. Your normal lease price may be ~$250/month. I'll rent it from you for $8/day with a minimum of 14 days ($112 for 2 weeks). I'll commit to at least 2 weeks, but you don't need to commit me anything as long as I don't need to pay for the time I don't use. So if you sell to me, but you find another buyer, no problem, take it away, and sell it elsewhere. If you need to pull ram out of the server, no problem, you can do that to. Just don't charge me for the hour or so its down, but I'll happily continue to rent it for every hour you let me.

What I need is compute and lots of it. I expect to be utilizing >80% of the CPU for >2 weeks for some number crunching tasks which I cannot do on a GPU.

I'm open to any kind of CPU and I can pay proportionally for each. Assume min RAM is 32GB and min disk is 500GB SSD, preferably NVMe.

The benchmark figure is a single Epyc 7702 server, which I can pay $8/day or $112 for 2 weeks.

Here's an incomplete list of other CPUs and their relative performance to the 7702, for which I can pay proportionally.

Dual Epyc 7702 = 190%
Epyc 9454P = 123%
Epyc 7662 = 105%
Epyc 7702 = 100% <- Benchmark CPU
Epyc 4565P = 65%
Dual Xeon E5-2699v4 = 62%
Dual Xeon Gold 6142 = 58%
Epyc 4545P = 52%
Dual Xeon Gold 6138 = 50%
Epyc 7402 = 48%
Ryzen 9 7900 = 47%
Dual Xeon E5-2697v2 = 32%
Xeon E5-2699v4 = 31%

I'm basically looking for the equivalent of 250 x Epyc 7702 machines. But I can take different CPUs, just my QTY would look different. I'd prefer to have higher end ones due to ease of management, but if that's not available, I can take smaller ones.

IPMI is nice but not necessary. Ubuntu 24 or Alma 8 are preferred, but pretty much any flavor works.

If anyone has any spare compute, please let me know.

And to be clear: I do not need a lot of bandwidth. A stable/reliable connection is sufficient. You can block most ports if your'e worried abuse. The compute will be used for back testing certain models on historical data, and this is quite time sensitive, hence the rush to obtain as much compute as possible as quickly as possible.

If someone had stock of 250 Epyc 7702s, we would happily rent them for 2 weeks for $28,000. We probably need it even longer but we guarantee to rent for 2 week if you want us to.

If anyone is interested, please let me know.

Have you tried Hetzner? They allow hourly billing so that may fit your needs. If you are bringing in revenue for them without abusive bullshit that big spenders sometimes bring(email spam, bitcoin/crypto mining, etc), I'm sure their marketing team can pull something to your needs(under the table, more discount on setup fees or stuff than whats on their website) and maybe minus up the setup cost for you.

Say hi to Katie for me. @Hetzner_OL :3

  • Maybe @crunchbits could work out a deal for you. They have Epyc 7702 servers for $280/month.

Yes. Actually their pricing is reasonable, even without discounts. Except they charge setup fees. We deployed a few machines but then when I tried to order more, they were very skeptical, and now they're making my wait and jump through hoops. This delay is burning money. As mentioned, this is time sensitive as the work needs to be complete within ~3 weeks. Ideally sooner.

But generally they are actually decent.

Yes that's a decent price, and really not that far off from our budget.

Though I think I may have found a vendor who has the capacity I'm looking for. We'll see in a couple of hours. If so, I guess I'll close this thread then.

Time is of the essence :-)

I'm sure if you deal with their marketing team beforehand, your concerns would be dealt with. Again, if you are not using the server for anything shady(grey area like high level streaming, torrenting(even with VPN), crypto mining(CPU and disk based), and provide them with all necessary documentation proving legitimate business operation, you will be put on whitelist.

They are very careful and rightfully so. Last year they were listed as one of the top few ASNs originating DDoS attacks so they gotta be extra careful. You can also wait for Katie(or someone else)'s response in this thread as I've already tagged them and see if they can sort this one out for you. Generally, dealing with their support directly is more painful than dealing with their community managers who are more friendly and can make exceptions for you.

Let me know how it goes.

I've found a couple of providers who I think can satisfy my all my requirements. @AlexBarakov being one. Many thanks for the speedy response.

@randvegeta - My suggestion to you would be to order servers from the Server Auction. They do not have setup fees, and you can pay on an hourly basis. However, I cannot offer you any special prices. Our everyday prices are already quite low. There are times where we will manually review new accounts where customers make big orders. If your account gets reviewed, please provide our team with some details about your use case. --Katie

If anyone has any stock of nice machines that are otherwise sitting idle, please hit me up.

Thnx for the advice. Looking through the auction page now.
