    Welcome to the evolved FOSSVPS

    FOSSVPS logo

I am Mike Parker aka @msatt on LET and LES.
Tom @Not_Oles asked me to take over the day to day running of his 'baby' the Free Open Source Software Virtual Private Server system.

    Background

The original system was expanding and maintenance, tracking and management was taking up a lot of Tom's time. Tom had kindly given me a free server in which I had installed Proxmox then Tom and I entered into discussions about using Proxmox for FOSSVPS. Tom was very willing to accept the idea and quickly asked me to take over the service. My feelings are that FOSSVPS is Tom's creation and as such he is still 'the boss' but I have followed his original guidelines and started streamlining the service.

    Contributions

FOSSVPS is absolutely non profit in fact we have no money and will not ask for any. Our VPS's are made available because of the fantastic generosity of some of the great hosts on LES and LET, currently Onlyservers, Hosteroid and Alexhost and can offer a free VPS in the UK, Romania and Moldova.

    Rules for a free VPS

Free and open source software only.
    White hat only.
    Not for commercial use.
    No service level agreement.
Ephemeral. Could disappear at any moment!
    Clueless™ Administrator!

The VPS is free for Open Source developers. If you would like a VPS, post a message here and one of the team will get in touch via PM. They will want to know what you are developing and preferably some links to your previous developments. Acceptance will give you 2 VCPU, 4GiB Ram, 64GiB hdd and provide NAT + IPv6 /96 access with either Ubuntu, Debian or Alpine in your preferred location. The servers won't last forever but we will always give you as much notice as possible, it all depends on our fantastic donors.
Finally this is Open - we will need your email address (purely for admin) so don't make a request if you wish to be anonymous.

  • i need a vps and you may contact me at [email protected]

thanks for the providers and @Not_Oles and @msatt

    • New FOSSVPS Leadership

Thanks to @msatt for kindly taking over leadership of FOSSVPS! Thanks to Hosteroid, Onlyservers, Alexhost, and @fmxm for kind server node donations! Thanks to @netixen for facilitating the Onlyservers donation.

    • New FOSSVPS Team

Thanks to @igctt, @shayneeo, and @pixia1234 for joining the FOSSVPS Team. The Team is helping administer requests, set up VPSes, and build infrastructure for FOSSVPS. There is a lot of good work going on in the background and likely a lot of improvements coming soon.

    • Proxmox as New VPS Creation Method

Due to huge community preference for Proxmox, @msatt has installed Proxmox on the Bucharest and London/Fareham/UK servers.

Existing VPSes on Chisinau are still running on cloud-init and virt-install on Ubuntu. Chisinau also will be installed with Promox soon, but no date has been set.

Los Angeles will expire on November 10. No change is planned for LA between now and the expiration date. Thanks to @babywhale for making the LA VPSes with his great BashVM tool.

I expect to remain busy elsewhere working with two new servers, a very fast one in Germany, and a 64-core behemoth in Texas. Thanks to everyone who has helped me get FOSSVPS started and learn a little about cloud-init and virt-install!

@Not_Oles are you sure you don't want Proxmox running on those machines as well ;)

So what would people like to use (or are using) their free VPS for?
Key rules being legal, white hat and don't be a dick just because it is free.
If you have a good reputation on LET or OGF you could be rewarded with a Free server today.

VPS Use Case: I will use the VPS primarily for personal web hosting (to host 2-3 small personal blogs) and development testing (to test my self-developed small web applications).
    Resource Requirements:
RAM: I anticipate needing 2GB RAM initially, which is sufficient for my small-scale web hosting and testing needs.
Storage Space: Around 40GB of storage space will meet my requirements, including system files and data for the blogs and test applications.
CPU Performance: A basic-level CPU (e.g., 2 vCPUs) is adequate, as my use case does not involve high-intensity computing tasks.
Traffic Expectations: My expected monthly bandwidth usage is approximately 100GB, considering the low to moderate traffic of personal blogs and limited testing activities.
Business Details: I am using the VPS for personal use, not for business purposes.
Technical Experience: I have intermediate experience with VPS management. I am familiar with basic Linux system operations (such as Ubuntu and CentOS) .

    Yes!

Nothing against Proxmox. But when I have a question about Debian or NetBSD, it seems easier to get answers than when I have a question about Proxmox.

  • I want to study the Linux operating system in a VPS and deploy some AI-related content.

  • msattmsatt Member, Host Rep

@zzdccww @xuweio you have only just joined so have no reputation on LET.

To potential requestors for a VM - Providing a server to someone that is unknown is potentially very dangerous for us as we become open to all sorts of abuse complaints. So reputation is extremely important as well as any Open Source projects that you may have developed.

At the moment I will decline these types of requests, but please come back to us when your situation changes as we really want to support Open Source and so do our very kind donors.

    Hi, @msatt

I want to apply for a free vps for deploying and testing python projects. Currently, all my projects are deployed on serv00, and there have been some unsatisfactory experiences in certain regions.

In the future, I will continue to develop more python project.

Chisinau Node Stays Stable For Now

Thanks to Alexhost for donating the lovely Chisinau Node!

Having talked with @msatt this morning, migration of the Chisinau Node from Ubuntu to Proxmox remains expected, but no date has been set.

FOSSVPS will provide a one week notice prior to migrating the Chisinau Node.

Thanks to everyone who is using the Chisinau Node!

    Hello LET friends,

Yesterday I went through the Chisinau VPSes again. I found and rebuilt one seemingly abandoned VPS with a dedicated IPv4/32 and an IPv6/128.

Of course we are waiting for the new FOSSVPS Team to reprovision the Chisinau node with Proxmox. But, meanwhile, maybe someone would like to use the VPS? Also, having the VPS in use probably might result in being able to continue using it after the rebuild. The new Team promised a week's notice before the rebuild.

I need your ed25519 public key, please. Open source users and developers, please. Give me some links about your activities, please, something to use to decide if there is more than one request.

Thanks to Alexhost for donating the nice Chisinau server node!

    Always best wishes!

    Tom

To the users in Chisinau, as @Not_Oles has mentioned, we do plan on rebuilding the server soon.
This means everything will get destroyed.

If you wish, you are welcome to request a free server in the UK or Bucharest and transfer your data over to it. Effectively until we shut Chisinau down you will have 2 free servers. Just send me a PM and we will proceed from there.

To anyone else interested in a free server - if you have a good reputation on LET and promise to respectfully use the server (nothing naughty) just PM me.

Why wait for Black Friday and spend your money - we are free, all to the generous donations of Hosteroid, Alexhost and Onlyservers. <3
