Performance Drop After Installing Cloudlinux

GB6 score when using Almalinux: 1900-2000
After Cloudlinux installed: 1600-1650

Its personal use but I want to separate Wordpress sites using CageFS. LVE are all set to unlimited. Is that normal?

Not an expert in CloudLinux but could you compare not overall score but individual tests instead to find what type of tasks are now slower?

WordPress benchmark score dropped too from almost 9 to 7+.

  • Guessing it needs more resources, but hoping not.

Performance loss is expected, but I wouldn't have expected more than 10%. 10% or so is my experience vs native w/ NO isolation.

If this is nested and already under some form of VT, it might be normal. And yeah, try some real world tests to see if the hit actually matters for your use case like tentor is getting at. The isolation may still be worth it.

    Hi,

The drop in the GB6 score after installing CloudLinux isn't necessarily a problem, but it's important to understand what's happening.

    What might be happening:

CloudLinux Impact: CloudLinux introduces an additional layer of isolation (CageFS and LVE) to limit the resource usage of each account or user. This means that while CloudLinux optimizes security and performance by isolating users, there may also be a slight overhead when adding these security limits.

LVE Configuration: Although you mention that LVE is set to unlimited, in certain cases, the default LVE values or the way CloudLinux manages resource allocation to users can impact performance in more subtle ways. If LVE is set to stricter management, even without explicit limits, the additional infrastructure load can impact the performance score.

CageFS: When using CageFS, each user runs within their own isolated environment. This may add some overhead in terms of I/O (file read/write) or system processes, but overall, the security benefits usually outweigh the small drop in performance.

Server Configuration: It's also possible that additional configurations, such as Apache or Nginx optimization, or specific PHP and MySQL settings in CloudLinux, may impact performance. If resources such as CPU, memory, or disk I/O are under pressure from hosted sites, this could also be reflected in a drop in score.

    Is this normal?
Yes, it's relatively normal to see a small drop in score when installing CloudLinux, especially if you're using features like CageFS and LVE. This doesn't necessarily mean the server is performing poorly; it just means CloudLinux is doing its job of isolating and protecting sites, which may lead to a slight additional overhead.

    Suggestions:

Check server metrics: Check resource usage (CPU, RAM, I/O, etc.) to ensure there are no bottlenecks. Sometimes, there may be configuration settings that optimize performance.

Adjust CloudLinux settings: Even if you've set LVE to unlimited, some default CloudLinux settings can be adjusted to improve performance. See if you can fine-tune certain settings in LVE Manager or CageFS.

Optimize WordPress: If you have multiple WordPress sites, make sure they're properly optimized (cache, limited plugins, database optimization, etc.). Sometimes, a drop in score can also be due to overloading the sites themselves.

If you're not seeing obvious issues with site performance, this drop might not be a serious issue, but it's worth reviewing these points to ensure everything is optimized.

    Hi,

    Thanks ChatGPT or its cousins

  • I decided to perform a test on a server with and without CloudLinux - there's a 2-3% performance overhead, and it mainly stems from accounting in cgroups. That's in a AlmaLinux 9 and CloudLinux 9 environment by the way, same actual server, just prior to converting it (installing the lve kernel module) and rebooting it.

  • Just bought Netcup RS G12.
    GB6 before installed CloudLinux: 2147
    GB6 after installed CloudLinux: 1800~

Looks like Cloudlinux kernel limiting CPU 10-20%.
