New to hosting
Hello all, I'm recently getting into hosting as a side project and have a genuine idea for a VPS provider that other services will not offer.
I am here wondering where to start? I know I will need a few things like a domain, hypervisor, and /24 block. I am able to create a decent landing page / configure the website, but I am poorly unexperienced with actually setting up the backend. Would somebody please enlighten me?
My plan is to sell VPS online like OVH or NFO etc would be doing. (if I sound like an idiot, pls teach me how it works
)
Covered:
domain
web development for landing page
payment gateways
IP addresses
Dedicated servers
Hypervisor
Questions
Do I need my own ASN for this? or would I be able to see if the hosting I have Dedicated server purchased from would be able to route the IP addresses.
Could I just find someone offering IP transit and have them route it to the Dedicated server, even if it is purchased through someone else?
How / what do I need to register an ASN? (My dedicated server is in vietnam)
Thank you all!!

Hello,
Kindly copy paste your message to chatgpt or deepseek and check the answer. You can also ask chatgpt to give you answer in your own language.
Thanks
You should change "side project" to main project and commitments.
I guess it's always summer time somewhere in the world.
You do not need an ASN, you can rent as much IPs as you can from almost any hosting company your Dedi is with or not even with. Having an ASN will make it cheaper (for you, longterm), easier, and better for your customers since you can connect with multiple transit providers and many other benefits.
Yep, you can.
you would need to check APNIC 's requirements and probably find a sponsor to make things easier, there's a LIR thread in this forum at the very top where you can find ones working in APNIC.
As for general tips on how to get started on webhosting/vpshosting, use open source panels (or low cost personal use commercial ones) to start a webhosting/vpshosting for yourself and maybe your friends (FOR FREE, do not make your friends pay to be beta testers)
Good luck, you are asking great questions which will have you in the right direction, keep doing that, ask all the questions, learn and test everything you can, and you will become a great host.
Thank you @wadhah ! I appreciate all the useful information. Excited to start!
ya can get a ton of good data from ChatGPT, also having a strong communication line with your DC helps big time.
Hope it all goes very well for you man, hosting is a fun biz.
Hi @thenewuser
You're asking good questions.
Be prepared to learn a lot to operate your own hosting, it can be a rabbit hole and if you have real paying customers, you usually have to be available for them to answer tickets or resolve issues.
@wadhah made some great points in the comment above.
Adding his, I think getting an ASN from APNIC could be quite expensive especially when just starting out. As far as I know, APNIC doesn't actually have traditional LIR sponsoring method of acquiring an ASN. Getting your own ASN from APNIC directly can be expensive - i think the registration fee alone is around 300 usd.
I would definitely recommend you to start without it (just getting couple more IPv4 addresses from your provider).
Also, IPv4 addresses can be quite expensive nowadays. If you had an ASN, you would generally be renting large /24 blocks for around $100/month.
You could consider getting IPv6 options for customers who don't need IPv4 connectivity to save some costs (and not end up on @yoursunny 's list).
Monitoring your Network and Hypervisors is also something you should take to consideration. This way you'll know sooner once some issues occur.
Lastly, I wonder what hypervisor you decided to go with, just out of curiosity

@oloke Thank you for the information! I'm thinking about going SolusVM or Virtfusion, Virtfusion seems a little more expensive and im trying to keep my overhead cost low as possible haha. I am prepared to be full time support for my customers though! Tawk.to is very nice for when they need to reach out immediately, as I have experience with running an E commerce website
@DediRock Thank you for your good wishes! I enjoy learning more and more about it, Ill make sure to establish a strong line of communication with my Datacenter
Give your project lowest priority. The less you care - the more clients you get. Just make price 7/year.
thanks man, you bet. That is great to hear.
$7/yr as welcome offer
as you mentioned your dedi is in Vietnam, things become a little bit different.
Vietnam ASN and IP range are managed by VNNIC directly (if you apply with APNIC they will ask questions and potentially reject the application)
You can only use IP range allocated by VNNIC to announce in Vietnam. Vietnam ISP will not accept your IP range if it is not from VNNIC.
You need to be a Vietnam company to apply for VNNIC membership.
it is best to check with your local community and ISP about the process. The general tips in this post are still useful to some extent, but Vietnam has its own regulations, and the infrastructure (DC, IP transit) is entirely managed by local ISPs.
It seems that Asia always has various restrictions, while RIPE is much more lenient.
This is true,
I'm adding some links for OP in case you are Vietnamese and it is VNNIC officials:
You better start with managed since you have no experience
backend is most important. hire an expert developer who knows hardware/software and security.
Hire a system admin - it is crucial to setup your server correctly.
I hate to be that guy but...you really shouldn't start a hosting business before you know how to setup the required hardware/software for the backend.
Customers don't want to buy VMs from a host who's learning on the job, so make sure you know what you're doing before you take anyone's money or it'll rapidly turn into a shitshow.
@CloudHopper my goal is to develop and test before taking sales. I am focused on making sure that I follow proper modern security practices. I am A+ certified, some fair experience in LAMP stack web dev but I am passionate about the subject and have much to learn
any tips from when you first started are appreciated, thank you!!
Do you hire? XD
