Looking for Dedicated Server: US West, ~$30/mo

Hello,

My current provider, RepriseHosting, is passing on a significant upstream price increase, which raises my monthly cost by 18%. As this is no longer within my budget, I am looking for a new provider.

The server will host a full Mastodon stack (PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, Redis). A high thread count for background processing is crucial, but note that all media assets are offloaded to Backblaze B2, which greatly reduces local storage and disk I/O demands. Proximity to GCP's us-west1 (Oregon) is a significant plus, and reliable native IPv6 is non-negotiable.

Required Specifications:

CPU: Performance equivalent to 2x L5640 (12 Cores / 24 Threads). The specific model is not important, but multi-threaded performance is key.

RAM: 32GB

Storage: Flexible, but must include at least one SSD of ~250GB or larger for the OS and database. I am open to various configurations (e.g., a single large SSD, or SSD + HDD).

Location: US West (California, Washington, or Oregon preferred)

Network: 1Gbps port with at least 1TB monthly bandwidth

IPs: 1x IPv4 and 1x IPv6 minimal (Preferably a routed /64 IPv6 block)

Budget: ~$30/month

Thank you.

  • Saw DartNode's $399/yr sale & $29/m sale... If only it's in CA lol

  • I don't know, maybe @advinservers can make you a deal?

Thanks for the mention! Unfortunately, we don't have anything that low end.

If you're okay with a VPS at all, we could potentially offer you the following plan:

    KVM Standard L
    AMD EPYC Milan (12 vCPU)
    32GB DDR4 ECC Memory
    256GB NVMe SSD Storage
    8TB Bandwidth (10 Gbps)
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
    $32/month

PM me if you want this plan - it will beat a Dual L5640 in every way, and we are generally okay with some sustained usage. We offer routed /48 IPv6 in Los Angeles.

I totally understand that this isn't a dedicated server however, and we wish you the best of luck in your search. It will be somewhat difficult to find a dedicated server at $30/month in such a high-priced region like Los Angeles maybe @fiberstate could offer something.

Thanks! I'll keep this as an option if you do not mind but still looking for a dedi for now (primary because I don't want to be a bad neighbor for folks on the same node. I do have some automatic backup jobs that max the spec quite a bit at times)

    OVH KS-5 should work. $20/monthly.

That being said, I feel like you are better off with a VPS/VDS. Even 4 cores of Epyc Genoa would beat that ancient Dual L5640.

Thanks! That's currently OOS in US West so I'll keep an eye on it.

Yeah I agree. Looking into that now 😊 Guess my primary concern was my db size is quite large (53GB+) and every backup takes a while. Being on VPS i may be a bad neighbor lol

Dedicated.com has some $35~ dedicated in Los Angeles. They're older E3's but it's the best you'll get anyway for sub-$50.
