If I would like to make website/blog, forum and chat am I better with shared hosting or vps?

I would like to make a 'suite' of communication channels.
Website for users to land on as the main domain root with just a basic static page of 'mission statement' then links to forum for more static information and then a real-time chat like rocket or one of the other open source ones.
I have a small vps I rent already which I intended to use for this. Will that be fine to do all the above? rather than shared hosting?
Just basically want to build a community around a niche like how people would unthinkingly make a facebook page and group and twitter, instagram and whatever relying on social media to host for them but instead do it with my own domain and open source 'social' software.
Phpbb for the forum and as above one of the open source chat programs. I will do a basic html landing page. I loved making a simple html from scratch a few years ago, rather than using some CMS bloatware. Lightning fast as no added fat.

A VPS is generally considered an upgrade over shared hosting because you get root access and can run your own long-running services. Most shared hosts don't allow background daemons and will kill them, so if you plan to self-host a real-time chat (like Rocket.Chat), you definitely need a VPS.
If it’s a full stack app running on node or something else, you need a VPS, shared hosting isn’t compatible. If it’s PHP and JavaScript based, then you can try shared hosting.
VPS is ideal.
If your VPS is on the smaller side, you could offload phpbb to shared hosting in order to dedicate more resources to rocket.chat.
Note: I like zulip better than rocket.chat, especially for self-hosting.
Beyond all the technical fundamentals—which are, of course, also important—the question arises: where will the traffic—qualified traffic—come from to make this a success? The most difficult task of all! Ideally, a national television appearance would be ideal—anything else takes years!
Traffic comes from mandates.
For example, student clubs of a university must create their homepages on this platform, in order to qualify for university activity grants.
Amount of grants partially depends on how many members joined the club homepage on this platform.
go for vps as you have full control of it

I think it really matters how much control you want , shared hosting comes with everything but in vps you would need to do things

I am control freak.
I started with shared hosting, but once I added a forum and chat, things got laggy fast. Moved to a small VPS and it made a big difference with speed and control. Plus, I could run stuff like Nextcloud myself, but later I found it way easier to go with nextcloud providers instead of hosting it all alone — saved time and headaches with setup and upkeep.
That advertisement for NEXTCLOUD was not obvious at all. Very subtle, new user, for your first and only post resurrecting this old thread.
All depends on what kind of traffic you're expecting. I'd start with shared hosting. If you hit more that ~1000 unique visitors/day ( try to get money out of that obviously ) then move to a VPS or something with dedicated resources.
