Matrix.org: How to stop the constant popup on login "Verify this device"?

I thought it might be an element issue but I just tried another client, fluffychat, and the same thing so seems a matrix.org thing.

Oh and I am using the web clients for each. I wonder if the desktop apps would be different? Will have a look into that.

This is so annoying and can't figure out how to stop it. It has been happening for the last year or two since some changes they made.

I wasn't so bothered when I have only been using it once a week or so for voiping but now I want to make it a daily chat messenger for a group this will really be a nuisance.

Every login, even though on the same machine/IP still counts as a new device it seems and they demand you verify it with your back up key or other device. I used the key and the same thing every single time again.

Also there is a litany of active sessions in the list which never go away for every time I have closed element down and get a slew of notifications about them on the top left when logging in. I have to manually go through and 'remove device' one by one in the settings.

I am wanting to invite more people and this is going to absolutely tank enthusiasm to use it if they get this too so got to figure out how to avoid this stupid 'feature' or find a whole new platform.

I would really like to figure it out though since matrix is a good mature project.

Maybe it is idiosyncratic to me and it might not be an issue for others. Will have to ask some more patient user to test this and see. I can ask yall though, do you experience this issue or is it some problem with my machine/setup?

They web client was very sensitive if you config your browser too much, for myself I prefer using their hydrogen client on my linux phone which pretty much just work™ for mostly time

Kinda is, they slowly getting better but for my experience using it still need many polishing user experience on basic level. Hopefully they make it soon.

Thanks for the information. Yes it doesn't have to be perfect but if this annoying popup would stop it would be a fine replacement for a chat service.

I am gonna try the app for the desktop then. Probably something to do with web interface like you say, although I know I am not making any changes between sessions. The desktop might just play better somehow. :)

  • You need to verify your identity from each device you logged in via secret key or something else you wont see previous messages or chats.

Its a bit inconvenient if you are using new browser tab to access matrix server each time as it needs verification. Best is using an app and verifying it once
