Help deciding between VPS packages

Guys help me decide. I am currently between

2x VPS-2 on OVH

6vcore
12GB RAM
110GB NVME
1Gbps uplink

Both combined sum go to 143€/Annually

--- This option by NovaCloud Hosting
6 Cores AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D/9900X
16GB DDR5 ODECC RAM
240GB NVMe SSD Storage (Raid-1)
2,5Gbps Uplink
1xIPv4 + IPv6 included
Location: Netherlands
15€/Month or 150€/Annually

--- This option by Layer7

10vCPU AMD Epyc 7402
16GB DDR4
240GB NVME
1Gbps uplink
at 157,82€/Annually

I will be hosting personal and client projects but also do some ffmpeg live video encoding. I have tested it on Layer7 with their test server and on AMD with 3 streams CPU load was around 13-15%, streams are NOT for public so bandwidth consumption is not huge.

My old VPS is expiring and I need to decide

Adults never choose. They grab both.

  • go with a big provider with good reputation, not just some random noname low end host

this will save yourself a lot of headache

Do you have a reason not to spread those projects across smaller VPSes and one VPS that is good enough to run video encoding instead of combining them into one? I usually do it that way and save myself some cost.

From these options, I would pick OVH first, then Layer7.

  • 9900x....

In terms of ffmpeg encoding, 9900 or 9950 are beast in comparison to other cpus.

Ovh anyday, or lsw. Lowend providers are affordable and provide great value for money but then again you will be responsible for all the headache that comes with the purchase of any issue arise while you are in production and somehow don't look at servers unless reported downtime from your uptime monitoring system for example nexusbites cough*

Edit: I usually have a mix of provides ranging from Racknerd, CC(directly), buyvm(going great for years), cloudcone, lsw, ovh, scaleway, hostbrr, and the list goes one. My crucial services like db and load balancers are usually from big names like lsw and ovh while rest are spanned on several low end hosts ofcourse with proper daily backups and another copy to my home server just in case.

  • avoro, netcup, clouvider. Or better ovh vps3 instead of vps2. What about KS dedi?

I can spread the projects thats not an issue, the solutions I use for hosting allow for resources to be split. The part which is keeping me for going straight with OVH are the YABS I've seen here, the disk and cpu on OVH are wayyyyy wayyy slower compared to Layer7 and then NovaCloud blows both out of water and with that I would have much faster DB, build times as well, but its a new provider which I havent previously worked.

Avoro and Clouvider out of budged which is at ~150/annually

Netcup is an option as well but the YABS I see are not very encouraging when for same price I get more specs in OVH

KS dedi except for the fact they are out of stock most of the time they have very old hardware which will make even worse environment than my current Contabo VPS, slower DB queries, more locks due to slower ram and cpu.

Went for the OVH VPS-2, just one on DE location. Geekbench scores are horrendous, should I refund this shit?

  • yea don't use OVH VPS for CPU related tasks. They are running old cpus.

Yea it was even worse than I expected, cancelled it and asked for a refund. Seems like the big providers are all running trash old cpus.

They had limited run of their Epyc Milan VPS which is a lot better but they now use old cpus and charge a lower price.

Got a smaller VPS1 in Amsterdam, it seems to have EPYC Genoa, even with 4vCPU its much faster except for the disk which seems shit

I think even netcup would have been a better choice at this moment.

You have specific needs and in my opinion, nothing can do that better than a 9900 or 9950.

Genoa is far behind than a 9900 or 9950 in terms of cpu intensive task.

Nova cloud would be the best and safest choice here.

  • Went for the @NovaCloudHosting option, lost some money with OVH but at least I got very good specs in the end for a bit over budget.
