Beware of scammer @NeoPhyTe

Hello everyone, sorry to take up a bit of your time.

Since my first transaction on this forum, I had never encountered a scammer, which made me lower my guard. It was precisely because I trusted strangers too much that yesterday I was defrauded by forum user @NeoPhyTe.

Ever since I posted that I wanted to purchase an OVH KS-MYSTERY service, he kept messaging me frequently, casually mentioning that he had gotten this or that mystery box model. But since none matched my purchase requirements, I never paid him.

Yesterday, after being silent for four or five days, he contacted me again, saying he had "coincidentally" gotten an OVH KS-MYSTERY service with an E2288 processor. He even provided OVH service screenshots and YABS information. After a quick verification, I thought there shouldn't be any problems, so I transferred the money to him.

Then he started "disappearing" and stopped logging into his forum account. That's when I realized I had been scammed.

In hindsight, when I examined the screenshots and YABS information he sent me, I used some keywords from the YABS to search this forum on Google. I found a post with YABS information that was almost identical to what he provided, which confirmed that he was a complete fraud.

I don't expect to get my money back. It wasn't a huge amount, but the feeling of being deceived really sucks.

If the person who scammed me sees this post, I want to tell you that the small amount of money won't significantly change your life, but it has turned you into a scammer known to everyone.

In the end, I hope all forum users stay vigilant and verify thoroughly before making any purchases. Don't trust scammers easily. As a victim, I was indeed careless for a moment.

  • Shame on you: @NeoPhyTe

  • He has no posts. and only few threads. hardly a trustworthy person.

Then he suddenly supposedly has the server you are looking for, lol.

    You were too greedy.

Following the principle of mutual trust between people, even though he rarely posted, after all, buying and selling is based entirely on good faith, and whether you'll encounter a scammer is always a roll of the dice.

  • O My O MY

This just isn't the right marketplace for mutual trust without some other positive signs (like community involvement, public comments from other transactions etc). Anyway you know that now, better luck next time.

If you also have had a negative experience with @NeoPhyTe , please let us know in this thread

Despite the fact that @NeoPhyTe has an old account on the forum -- since February 2014 -- he doesn't have many posts or visits

It's very probable that the OP (= @praise ) isn't the first person that @NeoPhyTe has scammed

  • let me guess...crypto payment?

  • People, if someone sends you a DM offering you a server, please let us know (because it's against the rules to do this)

We would strongly advise against sending money to anyone who offers you a server via a DM

Yes. But earlier, I had a very pleasant transaction experience on this forum, and I also used cryptocurrency.

Got it. If we could mark the server info in the threads so everyone can help keep an eye on things, I'm sure it would cut down on a lot of scam risks.

For an ordinary user (who doesn't have a Host Rep tag or a Patron Provider tag), the only way that they're allowed to "sell" a server on the forum is via a service-transfer thread that they start, and for this, they need to respect the rules for service transfers

Otherwise, an ordinary user isn't allowed to sell servers on the forum

I've been doing transfer for years here, there's always mutual trust (+risk). But I usually cross-checked about how solid their comments/discussion are.

The rules are here for a good reason about service transfer. May be time for LET to also offer escrow for service transfer, that could make more money than provider tags here.

There are numerous posts in the Requests and Service Transfers categories of people looking for an OVH server and asking to be contacted by DM. Anyone answering is likely to ask for some money in exchange for the server and to break the rules you are referring to in the process.
I know it's never ending to police this so perhaps it's ok.

I actually once thought of offering myself as an escrow, since I have an OVH account.

A wants to sell a server to B for 20 bucks.
B transfers the money to my paypal account.
A transfers the server to me.
I transfer the money to A and the server to B.

Then I though why bother, especially since I am the one who will get scammed lol.

Do that a couple of times and your Paypal account will be banned for money laundering :s

I know it's never ending to police this so perhaps it's ok.

In practice, we can't police everything, and we also can't make people exercise sufficient vigilance

If a user posts a request, then by the rules, only those with a Host Rep tag or a Patron Provider tag are allowed to respond to the request

That said, if an ordinary user sees a request and they happen to have such a server, then they might feel motivated to announce a service transfer (following the rules), but they would break the rules if they sent a DM asking for X amount for the server

  • AT YOUR OWN RISK.

This isn't money laundering. So he will have genuine strong claim even if gets banned.

I agree on this, big RED flag

EDIT: I've a confession to make, I've been doing this once i.e. offering my vps to someone requesting it in public (netcup piko) but the person asked me to send him the server first before paying me, and when I said no, he responded with "I won't lie to you, if I lie to you I'm a dog". That's where I decided to just keep the vps because I'm too lazy to deal with it.

I can assure you, atleast over the past year, nobody follows this rule. Just mentioning you're looking for a popular server model (for ex. KS-LE-B) on a random post attracts atleast a dozen DMs. If staff doesn't have the bandwidth to police everything, its better to back off entirely IMO and let users trade at their own risk.

You're right that there's a kind of "black market" that operates here for popular server models -- we're aware of this

Fortunately, it seems that the great majority of purchases on this "black market" are successful

At the same time, there are some scammers operating here, so we advise against purchasing servers on this "black market", especially if the seller is a relatively unknown user without an established good reputation
