What email do you use for domain registrars and email hosting?

If you want a custom domain for your email, you first need to register it with a domain registrar and then sign up for an email hosting service like Namecrane. What I’m wondering is, what email do you all use to register with the domain registrar and with services like Namecrane?

This pmo because I get paranoid about losing access to the email provider I use for those accounts. I also worry about the registrar closing my account or me missing a payment one year.

Speaking about closing accounts, I once had a Namecheap account and one day when I tried to log in, it was as if the account never existed. It looked completely wiped from their system. I never got an email about it, password resets didn’t work, and support never responded to me. Thankfully the domain on that account wasn’t that important to me.

  • I used addy.io. Theres also simplelogin.io by proton. Both works similar, they route to whatever inbox provider of your choosing and they don't have inactivity policy like proper inbox provider.

You probably already got an existing gmail, outlook, yahoo inbox or whatever, temporarily use to register with addy or sl, use the addy or sl address as registrar login, reg your domain, setup mail inbox address on the domain, change addy/sl routed inbox to the new domain inbox address.

    namecrane.com
The guy (Fernando if i recall) is pretty active here and super honest. Might be the only lifetime i recommend as he know what he is doing. Always answer my ticket, using his services since like 1 year now, more than happy with it, can't recommend enough.
Careful as for now it's us based not european based, so for corporate might be a problem

  • I would pick an email like ProtonMail to be honest for these important things.

It's a vicious line of many email addresses, but ends up at a gmail address.

i used gate.net or earthlink.net can't remember which.. back in the day to register my first domain, used my own ever since.

these days i have many domains across several registrars. i don't think i've ever had an account closed or disappear, ever. i've been registering domains since you filled out a form at internic.net and they added it to the roots immediately and snailmailed you an invoice that you could ignore for 90 days or something.

i had some truly elite reverse on irc back in the day son.

  • I never though scared lost access of my email cause I always download offline my inbox when possible.
For domain itself, as long you didnt buy from reseller / proxy, you can manage to restore your domain as long on redemption day/active without hassle (which you must avoided from first place cause cost some $$$).

I was absolutely an efnet shithead (technically still am I guess) but that wasn't me. I picked this nick randomly-ish for LET cuz I'm real funny about separating identities on the internet.

Possibly completely related to experiences being an efnet shithead in the late 90s.

  • The primary email is always free gmail/outlook.

  • I'm using any primay email connected to my paypal like outlook or gmail to sign up for domain name, and then get an email. Few domain registrars do provide free email box so no need to wander here and there. Else you can get mail box from any provider, like paid gmail, zoho, proton, etc.

dont do it! proton is a closed system. they do not support standard emailprotocols and move out infrasturture from switzerland to france and germany.

  • Another option: Apple iCloud+ Mail Custom Email Domain

    Closed system but privacy-oriented.

I just realized I'm using the same domain e-mail at my mail provider and registrar. The e-mail is hosted at this provider and the domain is registered at this registrar. I don't think Cloudflare or MXRoute will leave me to dry though.

I use a protonmail & a fastmail account for everything before custom domains.

  • Sometimes I use [email protected] - this is my public email address.

CraneMail now offers EU-based email solution. They have US-West (Las Vegas) and EU (Amsterdam)!

  • My primary domains are hosted with Google Workspace (Primarily for better integration, Gemini, SSO), and rest are in either CraneMail US or MXRoute.
