Please no more asking of $7/yr deals!

I notice there is a link between the downfall of providers and $7/yr deals and that is
whenever a provider starts to be generous and sell out massive $7/yr deals,
few months later, it starts going down hill (the worst being out of business)

as the saying goes, "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is"
what do you guys think?

This is a common practice across all markets and products. You can buy cheap, low-quality products, or you can buy once... but well. There must be both good and bad suppliers. The definition of a free market. Ultimately, everyone ends up with a good supplier, after many failures and wasted nerves with worse ones. This is what we call a customer development path. High expectations from cheap suppliers are an abstraction - this is why they are going down. The bigger and better ones will still build a customer pool that will allow them to exist.

Honestly... I have to partially agree on this. I know the irony that this comes from me but some people have been expecting a lot by paying so little.

I can see your viewpoint for sure, however if the provider is responsible and knows the numbers it can be a cool and fun thing. But lots of variables involved for sure.

hmm, one got to be very old patron at this LET forum to know what im talking about.. the post|threads|comments over the many years, new providers come and old deadpool etc.
others simply disappear from LET after being actively posting initial attractive deals.

I think part of the problem is that some people have the same expectations from their $7/y server as a $5/m (or more) server. A few minutes of downtime and they create multiple threads raging about how the provider didn't deal with their high priority ticket the instant they clicked the submit button, etc.

Personally, I treat anything that's less than $12/y as a toy. I'll maybe use it in production, but only as a backup DNS server or backup mail, when it requires very little local storage and it doesn't seem worth using a more expensive VPS. I've only got 7 servers less than $12/y, and only a couple are actively used for anything and even then traffic is minimal. I'd feel honestly rude pushing more than a few GB per day through these given the price point. Mostly, for me, these are just useful machines for seeing how my real machines appear to the outside world (such as scanning with nmap or mtr).

The next tier of $1-$3 are borderline for me, and I know the providers don't make a lot of money on these either. I tend not to use these in general and normally wouldn't really use these for production, just for occasional tasks. That said, I do have one that happens to be cheap enough to fall in this bracket, but decent enough that I'm using as an reverse proxy in my pool of EU frontends. I'd be happy using 1TB per month on these, although I'd normally only ever hit that on an exceptional month.

Beyond $3, I'd consider that the providers are actually making some profit and priced sensibly for them. The ones I had around this price point are all $5+ per month, and I'd expect them to work most of the time and that they'd actually resolve issues quickly if they arise (although I usually don't raise a support ticket unless it seems like it only affects my machine). If they have bad support at this price point, I'd probably just not renew them and move the services to one of my other redundant machines instead.

If they sell a limited quantity on special occasions, it is understandable. Otherwise, just avoid it and save that $7.
