When I saw its $5 lifetime, immediately bought it! (Even though I still don’t know what to do with it :D)

    Same :D

Can someone tell me what I just bought for $5?

Honestly this is my first time buying it and I haven’t used it before. I only knew about Shodan from friends who mentioned it’s useful for pentesting. Since this is a limited promo I thought why not. As for detailed use cases, I’m still learning, but here’s a good reference shared earlier:

Wait.. is this a popular service? Why it seems like I'm the only one who doesn't know what it is..

I also just learned more about it recently.

I had to use AI to explain what this was, I don't think an AI response in spoiler is against rules? so here is the explanation.

Shodan.io is a search engine for internet-connected devices, often described as a "search engine for hackers." Unlike traditional search engines that index web content, Shodan scans the internet for devices and servers, collecting data on their services, ports, and configurations. It provides detailed information about devices like webcams, routers, servers, IoT devices, and more, including their IP addresses, open ports, running software, and vulnerabilities.

So I put IP of my enemies here and see everything about their network basically? I feel like I spent $5 on something illegal.

Shodan is not for hacking, it only shows devices already exposed on the internet. The $5 deal just gives more search and API features. Nothing shady about it.

  • IP lookup seems inferior to ipinfo. ig it's not a main feature?

    Damn, you guys are stupid.

Visit https://account.shodan.io/billing scroll down to Compare Features.

It's the Membership you can get for $5. Normally it cost $49.

(Feel free to create a support ticket, if you don't know how to scroll down.)

  • Your card does not support this type of purchase.

Nahhh.. My debit card has become prepaid now. Sad they don't have PayPal options.

Because normally nobody would buy security scan service for their self hosted thingy.
They either simply do not write protect rules or use protection via cdn and use simple protect rule locally. Which is free

I tried with free services. No any information about my own hosted services. Looks like their db are rather small than other scanners like censys.

The university that I did my undergraduate at had courses that involved the use of Shodan. It’s perfectly legal.
