Stay Away from www.gigahost.no - Charged for overage of bandwidth - Gigahost review
I was just hit with an overcharge of $800 in bandwidth i did not solicit, i originally had my services with terrahost.no but they were taken over by gigahost.no and i had no issues until i saw my bill a few days ago and was automatically charged. Something i had not agreed with and they were not transparent about.
After opening my charge back with Paypal because they denied to refund me. they suspended my account immediately, gladly i had backed up my data. They also did not have any information about overages in their TOS but after i did this they immediately updated their TOS to include overage of bandwidth.

They are shady as F, and crooks, stay away you are warned.

So, instead of opening a ticket with the host you did a charge back. yeah and no shit they suspended your services, everyone does that.
I can understand that waking up to a $800 can be troubling. But perhaps there's a reasoning or a clerical mistake(eg someone fat fingered another 0 in there).
How much bandwidth did you consume?
Sure thing
Now for some chips and soda
He created a ticket and got denied a refund it seems?
Unfortunate situation tbf, I wouldn’t want a $800 invoice for one of my $7/yr idlers because something went wrong
But on the other hand, what’s the host to do? Suspend? Maybe it’s legitimate traffic and the suspension could cause even more issues
And also, if ToS didn’t mention this and they updated it as a reaction to your complaint, then it seems very fair to not charge you as a thank you for pointing that out.
IF being the keyword
I do not think you read this part
Yeah he posted the picture after I posted that. Was about to make an edit but decided to refresh instead. Maybe should've done that before too.
Anyways $800 for bandwidth overages is kind of extreme. So I wonder how much they used. Does the host send out warnings that you are exceeding bandwidth or consuming too much of the port? What did their network team conclude with their manual review?
@anon505 how much bandwidth did you consume?
latest web archive crawl from july 5th has no mention of overages

I would love my providers for just suspend my VM when i reach BW, so i will know where i need to fix and not losing $800
Problem here is it looks like OP was on a "800mbps bandwidth" plan on a 10GB uplink and went well over that allowed "800mbps" per month
I can see where the issue comes from as it gives him the option to burst to 10Gbps but if his service came with a 800mbps monthly limit then it wouldn't hurt to add a shutoff for that amount = ~260TB per month
I guess OP's server BW is 95th measured, and OP doesn't really understand what is that.
Yeah Gigahost fka Terrahost has always done 95th percentile measured bw billing.
I haven't received one of these emails in a while but I have this email from 2023 when I had one of their vpses.
They also make it very easy to see how much bandwidth you are using on their panel.
For a start that's not a review but merely an attempt to bash and smear one of the most well regarded providers here.
Good luck with that as well as with triggering thoughts about who is the crook; AFAIC it's not gigahost.
Their terms state the following:
"Unless agreed otherwise we will charge for bandwidth overages at the following rates. 20 NOK per TB for dedicated and virtual servers with a metered bandwidth limit, and 5 NOK per Mbps over the 95th% limit for servers with an unmetered plan. Pricing are excl VAT."
Gigahost should implement automatic suspension once the allocated bandwidth is fully consumed, and send clients an email when usage is nearing the limit.
800mbps is 260TB/month...but it wasn't enough
OP Said:
hello sir
bandwidth billing based on 95th percentile
btw my premium idler

You're right. Customer is right in this case. According to web archive, the terms on 5th of July (and all previous dates) does not have that rule with regards to bandwidth.
Customer should be absolved of such payment.
Throttle > suspend
This is how their notification system looks like. There is no notification to be set for unmetered bandwidth. Some way to keep bandwidth under 95% is to set some firewall rules inside the server itself.
We will not dive into details, naturally. However, it seems OP have omitted the fact that the service was ordered under Terrahost, which have always had overage details in the Terms of Service. This was also communicated in the ticket.
These Terms of Service can be found here:
https://web.archive.org/web/20240409124803/https://terrahost.com/tos
Yes, there was an update made to our website as it seems it was left out unintentionally. We have always had overage fees, its not something new. We consider the linked Terms to be the ones valid in this case.
We also appreciate the feedback of a suspension feature. If or when that is available we will announce that in our chat-thread, but since most services have 95th percentile billing, its not as easy as a metered service.
Yup. This is what we do. Throttled so that is still useable for normal use, but a heavy user would notice and ticket in if needed the cap removed and reset or adjusted.
So you rely on ToS from another company that was bought out for this charge? A company of which OP is no longer a client at?
Does that sould legal to you?
If you change TOS under gigahost, will it not affect the customers who registered under terrahost?
Either this or they can just choose between the two ToS and pick the one that benefits them the most in any particular instance.
How much extra bandwidth did you use for an 800$ charge?
Gigahost's terms from 2025-07-05 didn’t include the overcharge clause. It has been added recently.

The big question is: did @gigahost pull a bait-and-switch scam, or did they inform @anon505 two months before the change of terms, as Norwegian B2C law dictates?
If Gigahost snuck in an over-bandwidth charge overnight, they should be banned.
This is the way. Instead of suspending services in such cases, we apply 5Mbps in/5Mbps out throttling, allowing users to maintain access and purchase additional bandwidth if needed.
around ~800TB (2.5 Gbps @ 95th%)
