Here is Yabs from a free VPS at the Alexhost location.

There are 13 VPSes available of which one is assigned.

Eleven VPSes are provisioned with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

The remaining two VPSes are waiting for super awesome guys who need a custom setup.

The Node is running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on two E5-2680 v2 processors and 256 GB DDR3 ECC RAM. There are 8 spinning rust hard disks in hardware RAID 10.

    Hello,

I would use the node to run the following open source software, and for the mentioned general purpose:

    • A RIPE Atlas probe in a Docker container.
    • An NTP server for the NTP Pool based on chronyd.
    • An NTP Pool monitor instance based on the Pool's open source monitoring agent software.
    • An open source screensnap Docker container provided by the NTP Pool project to monitor the NTP server performance.
    • Generally understand the Pool's NTP traffic characteristics in a less mainstream location to aid in further development and improvements of the NTP Pool project.

All the above benefit the Internet community in general, e.g., based on the ubiquitous use of the NTP Pool for devices getting time, or providing measurement infrastructure to understand, and subsequently enhance, the Internet networking fabric. I am always generally willing to lend a hand, or help out when I can.

The USA and the UK are pretty well covered from NTP Pool and RIPE Atlas probe perspective. Thus I would be interested in an instance in Moldova.

Most of the above doesn't need an entire dedicated IPv4 address. Only the NTP server needs one specific well-known UDP port, and if possible I'd optionally use one specific well-known TCP port for offering NTS. So within those technical constraints, I'd be happy to share an IPv4 address, with the caveat that stateful DNAT for NTP traffic does not work well from a performance point of view.

My ssh key is ssh-ed25519 AAAAC3NzaC1lZDI1NTE5AAAAIEyaSzXOfD57Wxu+tc2AWAvKhGA1w5QbNbmihh6QGkrM.

    Thanks for your kind consideration!

Thanks! I will send you login info in an hour or two by PM here. I will set you up with a dedicated IPv4. I also will post here after I send the PM.

Welcome! Glad to have you with us!

@rickey Any chance you could please post links to some writing you already have online? Thanks!

Sorry but I don't have any posts like this currently online, I've actually wanted to use this as a chance to make some

  • @Not_Oles, great, many thanks! Looking forward to working with you!

E.g., once set up, and should the need arise later on, explore how that IPv4 address could be made available for use by others as well.

(It's already late in the evening here, so won't be able to start until tomorrow my timezone (Central Europe).)

I have a question, if I want to reinstall OS later, how can I do it?

  • Are all the VMs come with 100GB storage like the one running YABS? If so, this would be great to be used as my picoshare instance. This is used privately, mostly to transfer some files from point A to point B and the files are later deleted. Some times, I do forget to delete them and the 100GB space comes handy.

It’s very likely I’ll have more services on this server, but I’ll have to test the load first and see.

For the IP, it’ll be great to have a dedicated IP but not required. If NAT is the only option, would appreciate one of the ports is cloudflare protected so I can have cloudflare on top to help with the network.

If you want to reinstall your existing OS, we probably can do it for you easily by reverting to a "fresh" snapshot of your original install.

We don't yet have a simple, one click web interface to reinstall your VPS with a different operating system.

There are some really cool and tricky ways to do reinstall with a different OS by yourself from inside your VPS. To see an example, you could take a look at CloudBSD.xyz.

If you want another OS which has available cloud-init qcow2 images, we might be able to reinstall for you.

The Alexhost VMs in Moldova come with 100 GB disk. OnlyServers VPSes in London have 50 GB disk. The Los Angeles VPS from @fmxm has 80 GB. I think only one each dedicated IPv4 VPS remains available in London and in LA. With thanks for your service to the community, <3 these are both reserved for you until you let me know which location you want. There is some possibility that we could add extra disk space for you in London or LA.

    1. I want to compile and test open source programs on VPS, its main function is to manage and record personal domain name information and give reminders. (GitHub project name: domain-check-new)
    2. At present, this project has more than 100 stars. I will continue to refine it. The current plan is to add AI functions to automatically analyze domain name information and other management data, and improve the content of domain names through automated execution.
    3. The geographical location of VPS I don't have any special needs at present, I am in Asia, so they are all similar.
    4. IP v4, because it is mainly remote debugging. However, I added AI functions in the later stage, which require open interfaces, and dedicated IPv4 may be better.
    5. My ed25519 ssh public key

Thanks @Not_Oles! Was able to successfully login this morning, and have set up the basic environment already, e.g., Atlas probe is active, NTP server is registered with the pool and currently under evaluation, NTP Pool monitor set up and registered with the pool's beta system for evaluation.

Still some details to sort out, and finishing touches to be done, e.g., setting up appropriate security and privacy controls on the data that comes out of the system, but hope to be able to share some initial items later today, or tomorrow.

How compatible is joining the NTP pool (which is supposed to be a long-term commitment) with the ephemeral nature of this VPS?

@cmeerw said: How compatible is joining the NTP pool (which is supposed to be a long-term commitment) with the ephemeral nature of this VPS?

It's something I have considered. It depends on circumstances in the zone, which I am yet to explore. The issue is specifically with clients that establish a more long-term relationship with a server. But there are zones where those are in the absolute minority to begin with, and the large majority are clients that "fire-and-forget", and where the disappearance of a server wouldn't make a difference.

And while it is preferred to remove a server from the pool before it is being deleted - which I am planning to do, should the date be known ahead of time, or appear to become likely - it is not unheard of that servers disappear without warning, be it due to one really ceasing to exist (like could be the case here), or due some other unforeseen issue, e.g., network trouble. So clients anyhow need to be prepared to move on and should have multiple sources configured. Primarily not even because one could completely disappear, but for sanity-checking between them, and resilience (e.g., recently, one server in the Pool had issues, and a large number of clients without sufficient resiliency went haywire).

And the original guidance was created (and not adapted since) when the main NTP client (and server) implementation was picking an IP address once, and then sticking with it forever aka "long-term" (unless restarted, or a server was dropped via management action). The pool directive made this more flexible already, allowing to iterate through a set of IP addresses behind a name, such as the Pool one's. And modern implementations routinely pick new servers every so often even for "normal" servers (i.e., not using the pool keyword), or are able to switch within a short time frame should one go away, or start serving bad time. So "long-term commitment" isn't what it used to be.

So it is a balancing act, but based on my experience in this area, running NTP servers for the pool since 13+ years (though typically much smaller ones, but one of them ever since I started), I hope to be able to manage in the best interest of the Pool. E.g., plan is to start with a high share of load to "get to know" the zone quickly. Maybe there isn't a big need for capacity anyhow, then I could subsequently reduce my share and use mainly for observation, and the learning from the exercise. Or anyway would gradually reduce the load share as time progresses and the likelihood of the server disappearing increases.

I have a question, if I want to reinstall OS later, how can I do it?

If you want to reinstall your existing OS, we probably can do it for you easily by reverting to a "fresh" snapshot of your original install.

We don't yet have a simple, one click web interface to reinstall your VPS with a different operating system.

There are some really cool and tricky ways to do reinstall with a different OS by yourself from inside your VPS. To see an example, you could take a look at CloudBSD.xyz.

If you want another OS which has available cloud-init qcow2 images, we might be able to reinstall for you.

Can you help me to install Ubuntu 24.04, with

    • username: vuanhson
    • password: please set random password, I will use my key later

You can use existing qcow2 if have or download here (img but format is qcow2, can be import like qcow2): https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/noble/20250805/noble-server-cloudimg-amd64.img

    Thank you so much <3

I am going to pass on doing this in London because of reasons related to how we are managing the VPSes internally. If I remember right, all the London VPSes are Debian 12, managed with BashVM. Unless it's really important, I prefer not to mess with the London setup, which is working well.

What I could do is move you to Chisinau, where all the VPSes already are Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Would Chisinau work for you?

May I please ask, why don't you want to use your ssh key?

    Thanks! Best wishes!
