Mynymbox vs. Spamhaus - we are going public

MynymboxMynymbox Member, Host Rep
edited August 2025 in General

Hello community,

we are a privacy focused hosting company called Mynymbox.io.

Since a long time we have huge stress with Spamhaus, one of the biggest services against spam, phishing etc.

The reason for the stress is the completely questionable listing of domain names.

We have decided to go public with the case by writing a blog article that we are trying to keep. In the blog article we wrote about the issues which Spamhaus has and that their Domain Black Listing filter doesn't seem to work as expected. Or we have a much much bigger issue which is not on a technical level but a fight against privacy providers?

The case could also be interesting for other providers whose domains are listed.

Welcome! The most important question is: Is there any strategically priced welcome offers?

Yeah, Spamhaus is terrible. Join the club. The guy who runs it hates anything privacy related.

    We did a big write-up here: https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/193980/spamhaus-refusing-to-delist-false-positives-pompous-rude-attitudes-whats-your-experience/

    It's common, unfortunately.

  • I hate spamhaus. We do not care about them anymore.

  • In the old days terrorists would cut wires to stop communications. We are an evolved civilization and rarely have to resort to such measures to halt free and independent exchanges..

Spamhaus is effective at preventing competition. No one gets to communicate unless the correct parties are paid.

Support is awful. No one knows anything. The only explanation you'll get is "complex algorithm" and the only suggestion is "try again later."

The worst part for me is that it's marketted to the public as a service: to protect the average citizen from spam.

Microsoft and Gmail are their biggest users and contributors.

Maybe Microsoft does not like your domains. They recently started fighting crypto spam, blocking just everything.

That's it right there. You might be hearing all kinds of excuses for why things are listed there, but this is the real reason. The kind of privacy you want to provide and proactive policing of abuse are incompatible. I'm not saying privacy can't be had with proactive policing of abuse, but not the kind of privacy that is implied by actually advertising yourself as a privacy focused hosting provider.

You can provide privacy focused/advertised hosting or you can be in good standing with Spamhaus. No amount of complaining is going to change that, and Microsoft is never going to stop using the Spamhaus DBL for any amount of privacy focused hosts (even if every single one joins together in protest) because no major brand is ever going to be your customer.

And frankly, privacy is one of the things that bad actors want the most so it's a win-win from their perspective. There's nothing on your network that enough people need to cause an actual scene, but there will be enough threats originating from your network between registration and reactive handling of abuse complaints that they'll be facing a net positive by continuing their behavior. Most don't even bother sending abuse complaints to hosting providers anymore anyway, the payoff no longer justifies the workload.

You don't have to like it. Don't shoot the messenger. These are just the facts. Best of luck, but you're not winning this battle. It's best to come to terms with it and accept it. Spamhaus doesn't control the entire internet, you'll be fine. Now if you hit their DROP list, you really fucked up. There are entire spam-only networks that don't even hit that list.

Use Amazon SES for your billing emails and set the From address to a Gmail account, you'll be fine.

We used to run our own mail server but since our domain is on the DBL we use MXRoute which is a robust and great service, otherwise our emails wouldn't go through etc.

As written in our blog article Mynymbox.io is splitted from the whole customer infrastructure.

Thx for the link to the thread. We have exactly the same experience with SH. Their search tool doesn't work, their DBL filters are also garbage and do not work correctly.

Agreed. They hate privacy. But we need privacy. Without privacy there is no freedom. Maybe they also hate the fact that we are a crypto only company. Who knows.

We stand for privacy and will offer our services with their listings or without their listings.

You previously sent from hetzner and was listed in CSS
    https://check.spamhaus.org/results?query=65.21.214.250

    Then they unlisted you.

After several listings, they listed domain as well.

Looks like expected behavior from Spamhaus. Messages were unsolicited, so they temporarily listed it.

This is ths IP from our own mail server which runs on one of our infrastructure servers.
The reason for the Mynymbox.io listing is also bad internet neighbourhood as they said in one of our tickets.
We have a many many many customer domains registered, sure there were some shitty domains registered as well but we have removed. them already.

Try to remove mail.mynymbox subdomain, change whois to +/- real records, add unsubs

    Whois is public for Mynymbox.io.

    Thats the reason for SH

"Thank you for contacting Spamhaus DBL Removals,

It should be considered that mynymbox[.]io is in an Internet neighbourhood with “poor reputation” that has shared (or inevitably will share) its negative reputation with your domain. This may be due to the DNS server, the hosting service, the IPs used, or some combination of these and other factors.

This cumulative negative reputation has an adverse affect on any related domains, including mynymbox[.]io.

The domain is not eligible for removal while being associated with this neighbourhood. We recommend moving your domain to a hosting network with good reputation.

The information provided in these FAQs may be helpful:

Why is a domain listed in DBL?

But you put obviously fake info in whois.

Support might troll you, as they usually do.
CSS is a simple and automatic listing.

I would stop using this domain until they unblock it (may take half a year, check every week).
Gmail checks Spamhaus, so most emails will go to spam, even from mxroute or similar services.
    +Whois, unsubs.

This may be due to the DNS server, the hosting service, the IPs used, or some combination of these and other factors.

Remove all associations, as said above, like mail. subdomain.
Change dns provider to cloudflare or similar.
Remove this old IP from everywhere, if possible, or hide with cloudflare.

+no reason to use this domain until they unblock it.

just register another domain or better use (buy) an aged .com.
    like MynymboxMail.com

Until the domain is in Spamhaus, it will bounce in MS domains and go to spam in Gmail.

Unfortunately one thing I can't overcome is delivery to Microsoft if the From domain is on the DBL. It must be fine though if they're not rejecting for it.

  • If I can ask, is there any anonymous domain provider that works with spamhause and their DBL? I guess not... and using email providers such as mxroute doesnt help either. You still getting to the DBL because of "bad neighbours".
Luckly, those I email are using microsoft or gmail adresses and they dont use the DBL at spamhause. Why cant everyone follow those big email providers MS and Google that doesnt use DBL at spamhause?
If no one is using the DBL then its no use for spamhause to keep it.
