    Upgrade info here: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Upgrade_from_8_to_9

Looks like Proxmox Backup Server 4 upgrade required if installed alongside PVE 9, PBS4 is still in beta.

I think we will wait out 9.1X, as usually first adoption is like:

If anyone did test it, feedback is welcomed. :)

Amen, let somebody else touch the wire. Interesting it's based on Trixie, but I guess it's about to be released too so maybe not so interesting.

edit: doh trixie is this weekend, guess I lost track!

Also: if the OS is still not an official release you can have twice the amount of fun of being an early adopter...

True, but for this purpose (as a VM / LXC host), I've found it to be rock solid for the last several months. At this point, the release packages should slide right in.

Besides, by the time anyone releases a PVE9 installation to "production" Trixie will be final by then since that's in 4 days from now.

  • Wow you took the risk!

    Fresh install?

  • Is it currently possible to install proxmox 9 over debian 12? Or do i have to use their iso? In the process of moving my stuff, and proxmox is a part of that plan. Im used to working on Debian 12 and have most services running there, but need proxmox for a few very specific vms to run.

You would need to upgrade to Debian 13. I doubt there would be a huge difference for you.

  • I'll end up taking it for my home lab later tonight or tomorrow but if I ran anything important/critical with PVE, I would totally wait for the first minor version to be released... I mean, if you're setting up a new environment (like, never had 8.x installed), you might as well start with the latest version but for upgrading existing, it's best to wait unless you like taking risks. I've been burned by random issues/bugs at work upgrading to the .0 of a major version before that now it's always wait until .0.1 or .1 is released before even thinking about it.

As far as I can tell, no the network/interfaces file looks the same

    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback

    iface enp0s25 inet manual

    auto vmbr0
    iface vmbr0 inet static
                address 172.20.30.2/24
                gateway 172.20.30.1
                bridge-ports enp0s25
                bridge-stp off
                bridge-fd 0

    iface enp6s0 inet manual

I just updated one of my test OVH Proxmox servers and all went smoothly

So I have a three node cluster at home, migrated the VMs off the "main" cluster one and upgraded in place via ssh. I then migrated the machines off the next node and rinse & repeat. Everything seems fine so far and there was no issues with the process. I probably could have left the VMs on the node but I didn't want to deal with backing stuff up since my home lab VMs are basically throwaways. I just didn't want to look into how to release a couple of RHEL developer licenses and Ubuntu Pro I have attached in case something went horribly wrong. Migrating them off the node was just my "plan b" that if something went horrible wrong, I could just log in to the other nodes and either back them up or detach the licenses before starting fresh.

  • Jesus Christ. Upgrading what should be ultra stable hypervisor to unreleased OS is fucking stupid. All those large corporations that switched from VMWare have to "wtf?" themselves after amateur shit like this.

  • There isn't anything compelling in the release notes for home users to upgrade right away.

I literally just start backing up my PVE 9 on my newly setup PBS 3.7, "looks like" it's progressing well, should I abort it? :o

EDIT: my PBS is a remote instance, should be fine.

test you can restore after the initial backup.

I tried to find if PVE9 requires PBS4 or whether you can still backup to PBS3 but I couldn't find anything conclusive. (but this seems to suggest you need to go to PBS4 - https://www.reddit.com/r/Proxmox/comments/1mi9xk4/comment/n73k7ca/)

Well those "large corporations that switched from VMWare" normally already have testing procedures in place and usually don't migrate until a first (regular) update is released. So in that perspective they'll go "Meh" about an unreleased OS as the current base.

In the few decades that I worked in major IT environments with VMWare nobody migrated production environment to a .0 version.
