Tor exit hosting

I'm looking for the following;

either vps or dedicated server that will run tor exit, that amounts to the following parameters on a per relay basis;

should; 1 high clock cpu core/thread (ryzen preferred)
must; at least 2 gb ram
must; 0.5-1 ipv4
must; vps 20gb nvme ssd (including OS), dedicated server 30-40GB nvme SSD total
must; 1gbit full duplex - unlimited (not fair use clauses, I will use everything)
should; <15$ a month per relay
should; not located in germany

using these params, a dedicated server with ryzen 16 cores (32 threads), 64gb ram, 30-40GB nvme SSD, 10gbit unlimited, 15 IPv4 for ~300$ US monthly. or vps with 1 ryzen core, 2gb ram, 20gb nvme SSD, 1gbit unlimited for 10-15$ monthly.

network work bandwidth is the biggest bottleneck I've had thus far for this pricing range. I can bring my own ASN/IPs if required to prevent reputation damage. I'm also open to buying /24 IPv4 blocks that already have bad reputation for the appropriate price that comes with it.

for those thinking, with that pricing, goodluck - I have been an exit operator for years now, and these prices are based on what I've already rented them for. note that I am essentially burning money, I do not profit from this, hence I am optimizing for cost.

1Gbps unmetered can't be done for less than 40/m by itself.

Hi, If I understand correctly, you are looking for 1 Gbps for 15 dollars per month? In Europe, a 1 Gbps connection at the 95th percentile costs around 100 euros per month

We can provide 10Gbit unmetered at this Budget but not ryzen.

    Dual E5-2680v4
    64GB DDR4 RAM
    512GB SSD
    10Gbit unmetered
    350€/m

    own ASN and BYOIP possible

We also have 1gbit unmetered servers like
    e5-2620v3
    16gb ddr4
    2x512GB SSD
    1gbit unmetered
    55€/m

    Located in Netherlands

    should; not located in germany

Nice of you to notice that. Too many relays are running in germany. Sadly, I run two of em (guard/middle) there because of low price (better than nothing!). Both are unmetered 100Mbit/s so each consumes around ~30TB/m. Surprisingly, both have 1g/1c and most of the time only ~60% of resources are used. Maybe Arti will even optimize further and reduce the resource requirements. I don't understand your storage requirements, 10G should be more than enough right?

Like @gsea4 said, we are very exit friendly if you use our required exit policy. I run 16 exits myself, and a big operator runs 4 more.

Realistically exit relays don't use a lot of storage space. I've run them on much less storage, and even mechanical drives.

  • Exit relays don't require much disk space. It seems a dangerous website might be hosting this on the dark web.

    Hi, are you shadowbrokers.eu? (cozybeardev)

    1. Romanian based iHostArt @Calin and kyun (ihostart's reseller) @naphtha are okay with running Tor exits on their networks. (AS214209)

    2. al.uy @aluy should be okay with it too. They have 10Gbps unmetered for cheap in the Netherlands . I don't recommend starting another NL relay (see below). (AS211507)

    3. We also have a pro-Tor Maxko Hosting @MAXKO_Hosting here. Servers in Hungary, Croatia, Bulgaria, South Africa and soon Libya. They hold large share of Tor relays already and you might have gotten an (spam) email about them if you are relay operator (AS211619).

    4. I would recommend @UrDN here but they got seized recently...
Maybe hostiko @hostiko could take their place. Servers in Ukraine and Poland.
      (AS214379)

    5. It is best to ask around (like you're doing here), or contact providers directly with the question about exit nodes. Obviously the less common provider - the better for decentralization.

note: don't expect reliability from first 2 providers I listed, for hosting Tor relay might be fine

No, actually running more relays in DE/NL/US centralizes the network even further.
There have been attempts to link paths of German relays.

I appreciate the efforts tho :)
Find at least some unique provider that doesn't have a lot of Tor nodes on his network yet. We really do not need more Hetzner/Netcup relays.

    must; 0.5-1 ipv4

Why is half an IPv4 even in your requirements? Would that reduce costs? And realistically, who would even want to share an IP address with a Tor exit relay?

I am running it on some no-name hoster actually, for a while. But agreed, hetzner and netcup are no-go and honestly should be banned by Tor devs.

You don't even need exit node if someone is hosting an onion service.

You can run two relay's per IPv4. It's to optimize costs, I'm not referring to using shared IPs with other users.

Thanks for the valuable input! Will look into this.

I personally don't mind using germany or netherlands as a location, but I do avoid it if possible. Both countries have good privacy laws and fantastic infrastructure, there is also minimal censorship. I do refuse to host at or via the dominant ASN's / datacenters - like Hetzner or OVH. I also verify this at every provider to ensure I'm not dealing with a reseller.

I have hosted at obscure places, but everything sucks in my experience. Bad hardware, support, pricing, connections and stability. I also hosted a lot in Russia, which has OK infra - but censorship is becoming an increasing issue, which has been causing issues for my relays.

Germany has terrible privacy laws. They infamously also were behind KAX17, the actor who ran almost 23% of the relays trying to deanonymize Tor users.
