📢 TunnelBroker Service Update & Humble Request for Support

    Hey LET community! 👋

Some of you may know me from my free IPv6 Tunnel Broker service that I launched here a while back. I'm reaching out today with a difficult but honest update.

    Current Situation

Due to some recent health issues, I've found myself in a tough financial spot. I have a 4-year-old daughter and a wife, and medical expenses have really drained my resources. I'm currently working hard to get back on my feet, but in the meantime, I've had to cut expenses to the absolute minimum.

Unfortunately, my hosting provider (Gigahost.no) has declined my request for payment deferral until December 15th - which is understandable given my payment history over the past months wasn't exactly stellar (delays of 1-2 weeks). This means the tunnelbroker service will experience downtime until I can sort this out.

I sincerely apologize to everyone relying on this service. 💔

A Bit About My FOSS Contributions

Besides the tunnelbroker, I maintain several other open-source projects:

I genuinely enjoy contributing to the community and want to keep doing so.

    How You Could Help

I'm looking for temporary support (2-3 months) until I get back on track financially. Two options:

    1. Financial contributions - Any amount helps to keep the service running
    2. Server sponsorship - If any ISP or provider could sponsor a VPS for this project:
      • BGP session capability
      • 4 vCPU / 4-6 GB RAM / ~50 GB SSD

If you're able and willing to help, please reach out via PM or drop a comment in this thread.

No pressure at all - I completely understand if this isn't something you can do. I just wanted to be transparent with the community about what's happening rather than disappearing without explanation.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for being such a great community.

We are up to date with irssi/irssi master and I hope to keep it so that every month I will check if irssi/irssi master has any updates and cherry pick them to erssi + own improvements. So for now 1.4.5 is behind our branch I think.

Thanks to the kindness of the LET community, it’s likely that between the holidays and the New Year we’ll be able to add two new endpoints for our tunnelbroker (NL and US).

I’m already starting work today on the engine that powers everything, but at the moment I can only dedicate about half an hour to an hour per day to this task.

I also don’t want to deploy anything that hasn’t been thoroughly tested.

As for WireGuard support — if all tests this weekend go well, a rollout might happen next week.

    Hey LET,

Wanted to be transparent with the community about a security incident on my free IPv6 tunnel broker service (tb.tahio.eu).

    What happened:
On December 5th, the server was compromised via CVE-2025-55182 (critical RCE vulnerability in Next.js React Server Components). The attacker deployed XMRig cryptominer malware.

    What was NOT affected:
    - User data is stored in Supabase (external database) - I've verified the logs and there were no unauthorized queries
    - No evidence of data exfiltration
    - The attacker's goal was cryptomining, not data theft

    Actions taken:
    - Malware removed and analyzed
    - Next.js updated to patched version (16.0.8)
    - Full server reinstallation in progress (clean slate approach)
    - All API keys and credentials being rotated

    Downtime:
The service will be offline for a few hours during reinstallation.

    Lessons learned:
    - Keep dependencies updated (the vulnerable Next.js version was only a few weeks old)
    - External database hosting paid off - attack surface was limited

No action required from users, but if you want to change your password after service is back - go ahead.

    Thanks for your understanding.

Update: tb.tahio.eu is back online + WireGuard support! 🎉

    Hey LET,

Quick follow-up on the security incident I reported earlier.

    Service Status: ✅ ONLINE

The full reinstallation is complete and the tunnel broker is back up and running. All existing tunnels have been automatically recovered.

    What's New

While rebuilding from scratch, I took the opportunity to add a feature that's been on my TODO list for a while:

    🔒 WireGuard Tunnel Support

In addition to the classic SIT and GRE tunnels, you can now create WireGuard-based IPv6 tunnels:

    • Better performance - WireGuard is significantly faster than SIT/GRE encapsulation
    • Modern encryption - Built-in crypto, no reliance on protocol 41 passthrough
    • Firewall-friendly - Works over UDP, easily traverses NAT
    • One-click config - Download ready-to-use .conf file from the dashboard

    Security Improvements

    • Next.js updated to latest patched version
    • Fresh server install (Debian 13)
    • Improved firewall rules with per-tunnel rate limiting
    • All credentials rotated

    Call for Testers

If you've had issues with SIT tunnels due to ISP blocking protocol 41, give WireGuard a try - it should work where SIT doesn't.

Create a new tunnel at https://tb.tahio.eu and select "WireGuard" as tunnel type.

Feedback welcome - either here or via the contact form on the site.

    Cheers!

TunnelBroker Update: Tunnel Limit System Changed

    Hey everyone!

Quick update on the tunnel limiting system for tb.tahio.eu.

    What Changed?

Before: The system tracked "lifetime created tunnels" - once you created 2 tunnels (even if you deleted them), you were permanently blocked from creating more.

Now: The system tracks active tunnels only. You can freely delete tunnels and create new ones as needed.

    The Rules

    • Maximum 2 active tunnels per user at any time
    • Delete a tunnel → you can create a new one
    • No more lifetime restrictions

    Why?

Some users hit the limit, deleted their tunnels to try different configurations, and found themselves locked out. That wasn't fair - the limit should prevent abuse, not punish experimentation.

    Affected Users

If you were previously blocked after deleting tunnels, your account has been automatically fixed. You should now be able to create tunnels again (up to the 2 active limit).

    Supported Tunnel Types

    As a reminder, we support:

    • SIT (IPv6-in-IPv4) - most compatible
    • GRE - for specific routing needs
    • WireGuard - modern encrypted tunnels

Questions? Issues? Let me know in this thread.

Is it possible to tunnel IPv6 over IPv6 (GRE or WireGuard)?
The use case is getting a /64 into a machine that has only /128.

as system is not ready for it I can say no. But we can do that after multi endpoint update. Try to ask me in about 2-3 weeks.
