Ah okay. I can work with Ubuntu as well, but alpine would be true LowEnd
Wow, that's pretty fast!
Crazy to see 267.22 GB of data transferred in 13 minutes, that's just on another level for free servers
@BasToTheMax @rickey
Thanks to @dan_onlyservers and @netixen for the kind server donation!
Done!
Psst! Does someone want a test VPS? You know, cluelessβ’ administrator, no service level promises, could disappear instantly at any time, not for business use, white hat only. Have to say thank you to OnlyServers and Netixen plus post about your test results.
I wil PM login info. If you can't get in, please remind me to turn your VPS on.
What am I supposed to write here?
@Samoht999 Up to you, right? Please look into your heart and say what you feel? Probably you feel gratitude towards the server donors? Probably, if you would like a free test VPS, you know what tests you want to run and how and why. So perhaps you might feel generous enough to share a little of your knowledge? Perhaps there are other additional or alternative topics you also might want to discuss? One of our goals here is to enjoy higher quality forum discussions. Thank you! Best wishes! Tom
More capital letters, hehe!
You're really doing impressive work for the community.
Good luck with everything!
Ooohhh! GLWS! --> GLWE!
I like it!
Especially appropriate here since FOSSVPS does not make "sales!"
Also:
Haha, General Learning With [Mostly] Errors! That's me!
My suggestion would be to fill it up with dummy content that is related and apply for Google Adsense. Make it so that people have to check in every week or risk their server getting deleted to help prevent idlers and also ad impressions.
Might sound a little scummy but I think it would help recoup some of the cost and if you earn profit, you could perhaps add more nodes and expand
Thanks @dan_onlyservers and @netixen for the epic server donation! π₯
I would like to test some software that I've never used before, would be happy to share results with everyone.
PS: Thanks @dan_onlyservers and @netixen for the server donation
@Not_Oles you didnt ask us for server for new project
You want to provide a node? π
I would probably use the vps to offer a free service for LET members (for example by installing Gitea and offering a free git server for let members
)
EDIT: of course by using open source software or my own (that will be open source)
Update: @babywhale, of BashVM fame, kindly came by last evening. We tried adjusting the networking to change the first eight of the existing sixteen VPSes to macvtap instead of NAT, while leaving the remaining eight on NAT. We didn't quite get everything working. Maybe we can try some more tonight.
@babywhale This morning I updated and rebooted the node. We now have a new iproute2 suite and also a new kernel. I noticed that the default network was not present in the list of networks shown by bashvm. Only mcvtp was listed.
@BasToTheMax @rickey When the VPSes are back up, I will assign one to each of you. I will PM you the login info. Assuming you guys and other testers are okay with the setup, then we can go ahead and offer the remaining VPSes.
Hi @Hosteroid!
You have already been more than generous!
Furthermore, your generosity has improved my sleep, since the server I already have from you is super stable. It compiles and compiles and compiles all night while I am peacefully sleeping!
Perhaps I peacefully slept through my opportunity to ask you for another server?
But, if you want to contribute yet another server to new project FOSSVPS, I will do my best to get something fun and interesting going here at LET.
Thanks for posting! Thanks for thinking of me and of FOSSVPS!
Always best wishes!
Tom
Yeah, networking can be a pain π
I hope it works out!
Not so much painful. More like opportunity overflow.
Let's compare the libvirt XML files on another server which is working with macvtap against this server, which isn't working with macvtap. On the working server, in /etc/libvirt/qemu/xxx.xml, I see
On this server, I see
When I made the network here, I called it "mcvtp" as a way of differentiating the individual network name from the name of its network type. I am guessing the change of the network name is not significant? We could call it "Tom" and that would be okay?
The other change is from "virtio" (other server, working) to "e1000" (this server, not working).
Now let's look at the qemu commands on the other server where macvtap is working and compare to this server where macvtap is not working.
In the qemu command for the VM that's working on the other server, I see
In the not working qemu command here, I see
I am guessing that the e1000 here would need a bridge, which we are not providing because macvtap, which goes direct, doesn't need a bridge (and the only VM that's running now is macvtap).
Here:
So I am guessing we have to figure out why BashVM is specifying e1000 in the XML file instead of virtio? Then we have to change the XML file from e1000 to virtio and restart the VPS?
Finally, we have to get the default non-macvtap network going for the NAT VPSes?
Well, guys, I might be wrong here. Any hints and corrections would be appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks especially to @dan_onlyservers, @netixen, and @babywhale for the nice server and for bashvm!
so in our case im not 100% of the issue ( i think its more of the vm rather then the hypervisor ) but know the e1000 would not be the issue ( in the latest version of bashvm i only use the e1000 driver for windows ) since virtio works better with linux
@babywhale
I added a symlink to /etc/libvirt/qemu which can point to the original version of the XML file or to my modified version. Right now I have left the symlink pointing to my modified version, but feel free to change it if you wish.
When I manually change the symlink to point to the XML file modified as I mentioned above,
then, when I start the VPS and console into it (waiting two minutes for some fun, repeated error messages to subside), I can enter a few iproute2 commands and then IPv6 works.
Haha, I got curl -6 to print the NetBSD.org home page to standard output. /s What could be better?
I am guessing that I can get IPv4 also working once I figure out the correct iproute2 commands for the IPv4 in that exact situation.
IPv6 doesn't work until after I enter my not-quite-right for IPv4 iproute2 commands.
If I can get iproute2 to work, probably we can go from there to whatever we need for persistent configuration.
More tomorrow. Sleep now. . . .
Thanks for your constant, always kind help!
Hit me up in messages to arrange it π
Hello!
Remember how well everything worked when we were trying NAT IPv4?
Now, instead of NAT, we are trying the additional IPv4 subnet kindly provided by OnlyServers. However, it seems a little above my pay grade to get the additional IPv4 subnet working.
IPv6 works from inside the VPS after (but not before) I try to connect the IPv4 subnet. For now, here below is what the yabs looked like with IPv4 not working.
Maybe, when he has time, @babywhale might be able to get further than I did. Maybe someone who, like @babywhale, knows more than I do, might be able to help. Maybe we could return the IPv4 subnet to OnlyServers and proceed with NAT VPSes only. We will see!
Always best wishes!
Tom

PM sent! Thank you!
Special Thanks to Alexhost!!
@alexhost
Special thanks to Alexhost for their kind contribution to FOSSVPS.org!
Thanks to @fmxm, @netixen, @dan_onlyservers, @Hosteroid, and @babywhale!
FOSSVPS needs to get some VPSes running on the Alexhost server and give them away.
Additionally, FOSSVPS needs to get its website up!
Thanks again, everyone!
Always best wishes!
Tom
While a vps with a dedicated ip would be way cooler; i wouldn't mind the vps being NAT π
@BasToTheMax Thanks for your support! The newly donated seve from @alexhost also has extra IPs, so we now have more opportunities to arrange a working system. It's also important to get the FOSSVPS.og website online.
Thanks to @fmxm, @dan_onlyservers, and @alexhost!
Thanks also to @Hosteroid!
And to @netixen and @babywhale!
FOSSVPS now has a starter website up.
How many of you guys were around in 1985, when I bought my first computer, and when many computer terminals still were green text or even still printed to paper?
More soon! Thanks!
