Self setup cloud or NAS, any basic solution?
Im currently trying to find out, whats the best purpose to set up a server and need some help in finding an easy way for my needs. It can be helpful for others too.
The last days i read about owncloud, nextcloud, seafile and other solutions. But i came to the point, that i just want to store files, not syncing them. Plus, the setups aren't easy at all, where i always stop my beginning, because some points never had been clear, what i have to do, or why some things doesn't work, like they are described in the guide.
On the other hand, i dont know, what i win or loose, if i install a docker image. Some things you can try 10 or more times until the commands work, or even not, because something is missing.
Then i had an idea, install a NAS software like OpenMediaVault or Rockstor for mainly SFTP usage. They have more possibilities and are available as an ISO too. But is that save on an online server?
In need of a basic solution, without that apps and packages for all OS distributions, wheres the point to say, cloud is better than NAS or the opposite?

Keep It Simple as Possible, you don't need VPS or such thing you must update and keep attention.
Simple is, if you dont need to bother about increase of price or deadpool. Wont host private things on it.
I am going to suggest something different because there are so many use cases. Have a look at yeetfile and/or hoodik. Both are fairly new products, so bear this in mind. Both have got web UI, encryption at rest. Yeetfile can also store passwords. There are other alternatives as well.

Try synology NAS, it works perfectly fine, I have my own setup
Three days ago I bought this for 17€ (ship incl.) for controlling my room fans. It's a tiny "netbook" that draws 7.5 watts with the screen on and YouTube playing
If you put a 1 TB 2.5" drive in it, it can be a "mini NAS" albeit without redundant disks, so its redundancy factor would be 1, akin to a single external USB disk to hold a spare copy of your data. With ZFS I have a compression ratio of 1.65x on it (plus ZRAM).
