Hetzner storage box - new account verification
Was just going to set up a new Hetzner storage box instance to store some backups in the cloud.
Do we really have to send them our passport for verification? Are you kidding me? For a purchase that might be $200 or less per year, prepaid?
Is there any other similar service where you don't have to go through so much to buy a storage instance with unlimited bandwidth? (guess that's one of the main attractions)

Yes, why would you not give it ? Its normal KYC
What's your problem with verifying ID?
KYC is not normal in hosting but yes, Hetzner loves it.
I understand the requirement is likely in place to help prevent abuse on Hetzner Cloud, based on various risk factors. I also realize they only allow one account per user or company, which adds another layer of control.
STATEMENT FROM HETZNER
"Because of our very low prices, we at Hetzner Online unintentionally attract a lot of scammers and spammers who try to abuse our servers. Our servers are powerful machines, so once they are in the hands of a scammer/spammer, they can do a lot of harm. That is why we have to be very careful which orders we accept and which ones we reject. We have a responsibility to protect others on the Internet. This is why we take the verification of a customer's ID very seriously. If we are not sure about the authenticity of the potential new customer, we ask them to send us a copy of their passport or of another ID document to proof it. Of course they always have the possibility to send the documents in an encrypted mail."
Just deposit €20 OR
@PulsedMedia good alternative if you don't need any kind of support
Hetzner is postpaid, not prepaid

You can skip ID verification by depositing €20?
It still happens, depends on how their system flags your account. There are 3 possible options, the first most likely being disabled now as I haven't seen it happen for about a year.
ID only - the account would only have ID verification option. This seems to happen when the system doesn't trust the information you've given for whatever reason, so the PayPal option is removed. MOST OF THE TIME>

Except for domains, in that regard they’re paid for nothing at all.
try to find some other provider to give your dollars.... fcuk KYC.
hello i can provide these prepaid without kyc
Do they want a selfie with you holding it ?
You can go to OVH to bypass KYC validation. (joke)
No, just the ID itself.
It's not that I object to verifying my identity.
It's that I have no control of where the image of my passport would go once it leaves my hands. What if Hetzner is hacked or has a rogue employee?
Fortunately, Hetzner has never asked me to upload any ID, and I've had/have both VMs and server auction dedis with them.
Hi there LETers, We do indeed ask many people to provide ID or documentation to help prove that they are who they say they are.
We keep this data only for the verification process and delete it in compliance with the GDPR (General Data Protection Requirement) and other data protection guidelines. So we only have that data for a short time. We have a data protection team, and you can see their contact information here.https://hetzner.com/legal/privacy-policy/ --Katie
