Dedicated Compute ressources (hetzner-like) with hourly billing?
I use Dedicated Servers from Hetzner (i5-13500 and i9-13900) for their good value for money.
But I don't need these servers running 24/7.
On average I need them about 1.5 or 2 weeks (non-consecutive) per month. I need them for 4-8 hours per day, and not everyday.
Are there better options for me, ideally with a platform where I can create snapshots and pay for storage, or at least my own "template" with my own software so I can respawn the server easily when I need to? Someone reselling hetzner dedis with hourly billing? or even non-hetzner, but in Europe?
I do snapshots with hetzner cloud and I recreate VPS/VDS when needed, snapshots are very cheap, and I save A LOT for the cost of the server with this technique.
Requirements:
- Intel CPUs with iGPU
- Storage: 1-2 TB NVMe
- Ram 32+
- Network, any reasonable FUP will do (10-30 TB per month @ 1gbps)
Thanks
ِP.S: another related question, what are the current hetzner alternatives with monthly billing for compute Servers? other than mevspace?

do you need to keep storage of VPS between runs or you can re-download it? think vultr/linode/digitalocean have hourly vps with block storage you can attach but not sure it'd cheaper than hetzner
can keep the storage if affordable, or can redownload the "files" if I can at least have a custom ISO/OS template to mount.
Hetzner dedis are now billed in hours
https://docs.hetzner.com/general/others/changes-to-billing-system-for-october-2024/
@satorik - Thank you for mentioning this. That's exactly what I wanted to point out.
@aft - Most of our line-up of new servers have setup fees. However, our Server Auction servers and the AX41-NVMe (visible on Robot, but not on the website) all have NO setup fees. So you can use these for the hourly rate and not have to pay a setup fee. --Katie
you should pay attention that the hourly billing system in Hetzner isn't what A LOT of people think it is.
on Hetzner, you still get charged even if you power off the server. the hourly billing takes place only when you cancel the server
in simpler words, you get charged only for the amount of hours you had the server on your account; and not the amount of hours you had your server powered on
Afaik, most hourly-billed providers do this (like DigitalOcean)
that's correct, and this billing system definitely makes more sense than reserving hardware and not charging the customer for it because they have the instance powered off.
but trust me a lot of people misunderstand the concept of hourly billing 😅
in addition to that, some providers also charge only for the hours you have the server powered on (although I'm not sure what advantages they get from doing that)
Only retards think that
@Hetzner_OL
Could you please confirm this is an allowed usage?
I have contacted the support before regarding this. AFAIK, if you cancel the server within the first 14 days, you are not billed for it... (I never got billed for servers I cancelled few days after ordering because I am unhappy with the hardware, etc)
The ToS state:
I know now I pay hourly, for what I already have if I cancel mid-month. Even extra hardware, etc.
But are you telling me the novelty is that now I get billed within the first 14 days too for dedis?
Yes, ofc, powered off still means the ressources are reserved for you. This is the norm
Hi @afn - This 14-day policy is really only now for products that are NOT charged on an hourly basis.
If you use something for a few hours or days and are unhappy with it, you can simply cancel/delete it.
If you order an Auction Server, and use it for, say, 17 days, we will charge you for the hourly rate of those 17 days. If you use it for 13 days, we will charge you the hourly rate for those 13 days. --Katie
I do the same even with changing ip @Hetzner_OL
Before i used https://scaleway.com but it costed more and found it slower.
Now i have a lot of fast different provider but pay monthly, but few bucks, sample of them @berohost @labze @Servitro
Maybe try TensorDock, although I mostly use them for GPU servers for machine learning workloads, they also offer dedicated high-end CPUs with hourly billing! And if I'm not mistaken you can pay only for storage if you're not using them.
