High-mem VPS for my hobby project

brejskibrejski Member
edited July 2025 in Requests

Hi guys!
So, I have my small project, it's a flight tracker (sth like flightradar but made in a completely different way). It's made of several microservices that in total are consuming more and more RAM and my Raspberry Pi 5 cannot handle it anymore due to 8GB of RAM. CPU is fine (avg load 1.83). So, I am looking for a cheap VPS with at least 12GB of RAM and 2 kinda high performance vCores (or 4 lower performance vCores, but not as low as Contabo, lol).

So, to sum up requirements:
1. CPU: 2 high performance vCPUs or 4 average vCPUs (app can run on ARM and on x64 so N1 / EPYC/ Xeon are fine) without high CPU steal.
2. RAM: at least 12GB
3. Bandwidth: prefered unmetered (fair shared) min ~250Mbit
4. Location: Poland / Germany (eastern Germany preferred)
5. IPv4 is obligatory
6. Company must have EU VAT ID

Budget: Up to 15EUR (+VAT) per month, I do not want any long-term commitments.

Currently my favorite is Hetzner's CAX31 for 12.49$ net, but looking for maybe better options? Or won't I find anything better?

Oh, and one more thing... I'm a bit in hurry - I want to perform migration before my vacations that start on... Tuesday :D

Is that a ADSB feeder/receiver thing? I remember doing that several years ago and it was fun tuning the dongle :D

  • Maybe @advinservers can make cool offer for you?

yep, but with community. I have a growing community with feeders sending ADSB data to me. My another server is processing those data in real time

    Hi,

    https://layer7.net/cloud-server

    Germany

6,99 EUR incl. 4 cores and 16 GB RAM ( feeling kind of cheap right now :( ) -- or maybe not that greedy... most probably something in between.

  • tenjitenji Member

Ever thinking of splitting the microservices to multiple vps ? Interested of seeing how it work, at least. Hope its not top secret project :) I'll pm you to check them out, if that's ok.

+1 for layer7, their server configurator with upgrade/downgrade server parts can be very useful for your project, but read about their fair CPU using policy for vps

My own vps server in France and uptime here is +-99.8% for latest 30 days (stats from my uptime kuma monitor)

Thanks for an offer! What about Turbo mode in Xeons? I've just canceled one service because Turbo mode was blocked and compiling all my backend was taking a whole eternity (compilation on my Pi5 was taking like 5 minutes)

layer7 is to be recommended. now imagine if layer7 had a cpu upgrade here and there. maybe a few ryzen 9 9xxx or epyc 9xx5 at similarly good prices as momenten...

    Hi,

Turbo mode? What exactly do you mean with Turbo mode?

A CPU will use the turbo mode ( higher frequency ) in cases where the workload allows it.
This situations basically never happens in shared hosting environments ( except when maybe a new host was powered on and you are one of the first (and only) customer on it ).

So what exactly do you mean with that Turbomode?

I suggest you to check what CPU Models a provide use for your product and then check for the passmark and GB6 score of the CPU to get an idea of how much CPU power you actually rent there. And then you will know if its fine enough for your project(s).

And if you dont know what is fitting, i suggest you to take some testing account or mid range what ever offer and try it out. In worst case investing a month, or if exist hourly billing to learn how much CPU you actually need, if you cant math it somehow before.

Your wish my order. Upcoming for the ryzen in the coming week :-)

If you are already bouncing against 8GB, I'd be inclined to say “at least 16GB” to avoid potentially having to move to rescale again soon (unless your deployment strategy is tight & well tested so you can redeploy to anything new with ease).

That's a neat looking website, I like the design.

if you hammer the cpu a lot @SilverCreek 's basically dedicated have a lot of ram and decent CPUs, and well within your budget, although he's only in NL.

If you're after high memory and don't care much for the CPU under it, we have some E5-2690v2s with 64GB of memory, we can deploy one for you @ $25/month. It's a bit out of your budget, however, it's a full dedicated server.
