Beware of Mad City Servers madcityservers.com [Scam]

Hi Everyone,

I want to share my recent experience with Mad City Servers so others can avoid the same ordeal:

  1. Premature Charge
    – I signed up on *June 4, 2025, expecting full service through **July 4, 2025*.
    – Instead, they charged me *before July 4, 2025*—with no warning or explanation.

  2. Attempt to Cancel
    – I reached out to ask why and to request cancellation.
    – Rather than resolving my concern, they abruptly closed my account and blocked me from opening any support tickets.

  3. Immediate Shutdown & Data Loss
    – My VPS was shut off *immediately, days before **July 4, 2025, with **no chance* to retrieve my data.
    – All of my files—backups, configurations, logs—are now lost.

  4. Why This Matters
    – When you pay for a full cycle (through July 4, 2025), you deserve the full service.
    – Cutting off access early is not only bad customer service—it’s irresponsible, especially when users’ data is at risk.

🔍 Lesson Learned
Before trusting your critical data to any provider, always check customer reviews, ask about their billing practices, and ensure they have reliable data-recovery policies.

They tried to automatically renew your service in advance (I guess it is up to 1 week before July 4)? Why did you linked the credit card if you didn't want to have such feature enabled?

In all fairness, I won’t give any examples, but fuck me some people have good content yet it’s an eyesore to read. I just read it and think “they are a high functioning dyslexic person”. As long the content is their own and is true then I don’t mind :#

First off, I want to say I am not defending them, I have no service from them or any interest, especially after reading this post…

So, for number one (charged/auto renew), I do not really consider that an issue. It is like a week before the date with the 4th being a holiday (assuming they’re USA) and they probably want to make sure it actually clears/goes through. Honestly, I personally always disable any type of autopay or make the “one off” type of payments for most things. It sometimes sucks having to manually renew/pay but I prefer it that way…

It is BS that you were instantly canceled without a prorated refund. You should have been giving until your end date since you paid money for it!

Now, for the loss of data, my opinion may or may not be popular, but I personally feel like this is on you. Even without canceling, if the data is important to you, you need a plan in place and backing up your data. What if an airplane falls out of the sky? What if there is a tornado? What if they get ransomware/hacked or hardware failure? I’dunno, one could say I have trust issues but I think you need some type of “disaster recovery” plan in place.

The owner of that provider is Brian.

Though there has been incidents in the past :
-Hotline servers incident (Brian was a co-founder)
    -Some other incident
-Madcityservers down for ~60 days with no information. Later was reasoned with hospital and related things.

If I skip the above, there has been no issues working with Brian and Madcityservers.
The servers are great, uptime comes close to 98/99 roughly, and network is fantastic too.

In nutshell, just keep your back up on, or have failover, and it's a good provider.

And with over 2 years, usage with them, I never once had billing issue.

Is it just me, or all billing issues seem to happen with only chatgpt people?

I have gotten servers from Brian ever since hotline servers. He is a good guy, going through hard stuff from what I gather.

I don't think that he is running a scam tbh. And I am honestly kinda happy he is still around providing service.

Also - and I am only assuming here, but I am guessing your ticket to request suspension/refund was probably the reason you got your service cancelled. You'd be surprised how far can being polite take you. Again - just an assumption.

Also - if you were asking for suspension - why not create backups in advance? Did you request cancellation via whmcs and pick "immediate" by any chance? Or "end of billing"?

Too many unknowns here. Good luck, and always backup in the future. Saves you many headaches.

  • I've had no issues with Madcityservers, good uptime and Brian goes out of his way to resolve issues.

I test a lot of VPSs from different providers and usually renew the ones that perform well. (Right now, I have around 15 VPSs from different providers.)

I saw this topic and noticed mixed reviews about MadCityServers, and because of some incidents that users reported, I haven’t moved my important data to their VPS yet, but I decided to give them a try and bought a service from them. After one month of using their VPS, I’m happy with the quality: 100% uptime, good network, and strong hardware. I’m going to renew it and keep this VPS. I’ll see how they perform in the long term, but so far it’s been great.

For many users, it’s always a good idea to keep a backup of your server, even if the provider is big or reputable, especially when you’ve got important data on it.

MadCityServers’ support was responsive and even upgraded my VPS, although I was ready to pay the difference until the next invoice. Other than that, I haven’t had any issues with the VPS (mine’s from their New Jersey location).

I’ll post an update in this thread after longer usage. So far, everything’s been great, and I hope it stays that way.

  • I was a Madcityservers customer for over a year. The value was unbeatable, so I was extra cautious to maintain offsite backups. And I'm glad I did, because my server went down without notice and never came back. I was never compensated, nor was an effort to apologize or explain the "situation" ever made.

I understand a medical emergency may of been involved, but damn, at least try to make things right if you decide you still want to be in business.

  • I have used MadCityServers for years without issues and the network performance is top notch.
