It's not legit. It is the attacker sending spam to the emails they got.

I mean... ffs, it says "Sam Altman is inviting you to..." Do you honestly think that's real???

I encountered this as well for an unrelated issue prior to this breach. I tried to change my email a few months ago because I never received anything to my MXRoute email - they were sending from sendgrid.net directly rather than through colocrossing.com. They simply replied to my ticket with "We can change the email address on file for $5. Please suggest." Never changed my email, and I didn't get the initial breach email either.

You also don't get any emails from them with your MXRoute email?

Yeah. I emailed MXRoute who told me about the SendGrid issue and I could either add my domain to an allowed list (which may increase spam), so I decided not to.

Well it got handled fast so that's the positive.

Now I'm getting spam on my registered email with them and they want me to pay $5 dollars to change it. Fuck 'em, I hope they do get banned although I know they won't... Worse providers are still being featured here constantly

Wait, Colocrossing is wanting you to pay them $5 to change the email address you have on file with them?

    Did I read that correctly?

Any proof of this? This is completely absurd if true.

    UPDATE:

Looks like someone in ColoCrossing still has some sense in them

So they would not pay a stupid ransom, but they charged customers $5 for changing an email address which provider was responsible for keeping secret in the first place.

While we typically avoid criticizing service providers, our experience with ColoCrossing over the years has been increasingly disappointing. We've maintained services with them in multiple locations, including an ongoing colocation presence in Buffalo. However, we've repeatedly encountered inaccurate or questionable invoices that required significant effort on our part to resolve. Their billing practices have proven to be inconsistent and often problematic, with attempts to charge for both legitimate and non-legitimate items.

Although their support team is reasonably responsive, the billing issues have been a persistent and frustrating challenge. As a result, we've significantly reduced our footprint with ColoCrossing and migrated the majority of our infrastructure to other data centers that offer more transparent billing, better uptime, and more reliable network performance.

@rsk said: Hence, that $5 we charge has worked wonders and it literally dropped the amount of account sharing/selling incidents to zero.

I guess I understand your perspective, but I have to say that if I ever encounter this charge I'd just drop you as a provider rather than pay. I know I'm ancient but I continue to be amused/amazed by the ways business come up with to annoy legitimate customers in the name of .. what even is this? Security?

Personal view of course and clearly I've not run into this before/yet.

(btw your signature leads to your LET profile, in case it's not intentional. I was trying to figure out who your business is)

Trust me, we know exactly who we go ahead and update their details for at no charge at all, and to who we say "hey, there's a fee to change this".

If the previous email was [email protected] and all of a sudden it is [email protected] - I will definitely be playing hard to get.

As a hosting provider, we have different perspectives. As a hosting provider, I care about my customers. If I receive a legitimate ticket with details regarding the change needed, that's definitely going to be updated at no cost. Anything shady? I'd rather lose that business (from the abuser) than getting my clients impacted.

No one size fits all here, if there was, the abusers would use that against me too.

    Edit: our business is layer.ae ( https://layer.ae )

That's fair, I did read it as an absolute. I freely admit I have no idea of the amounts and types of skullduggery (today's word!) you deal with as a host, especially in this market. I'd still tell you to stick it if you tried to charge me the 5 bucks, but at least now I think I wouldn't fall in that category anyway. Thanks for the insight.

It is was very real. You didn’t have to click on any links, just opening ChatGPT > Settings > Workspaces would’ve shown the Teams workspace. Paid models like o3, 4o worked fine. Now coming to the catch, they have deactivated the workspace. 🤣 Good while it lasted.

    Depends on the usecase....
Reduces the fraud issues incase of account takeovers and selling

The database got hacked and accounts were taken over. I guess that $5 did not protect much.

In this scenario it didn't. But I am talking in general about providers charging a fee to change email address.

Just report the breach, if enough people do this, CC might change their minds.

  • They deserve to be eternally banished from LET.
