MinIO Gives the Finger to Its Users: Pony Up $96,000, Suckers!

nghialelenghialele Member
edited June 2025 in News

I will take the original title from raindog308 writes at LEB.

Originated from: https://lowendbox.com/blog/minio-gives-the-finger-to-its-users-pony-up-96000-suckers/

What’s Being Taken Out?

According to the MinIO ChangeLog, “Community version is going back to be an object browser only.”

The following features are being “deprecated”:

Account and policy management web UI
Configuration management web UI
Bucket management tools web UI
Administrative console features

In short, while you used to be able to administer the product using a web interface, now you’re reduced to command-line only. Or pay…wait for it…$96,000.

So the discussion I want to bring up here is, what is your next solution for this? Providers, any of you high & low key are using this as a storage solution? Is this new changes affect any of your business perspective?

The project is open-source. Others will likely fork it and continue the project (with previous features) under a different name.

Exactly, people need to stop being poor and address this problem with greedy world leaders.

I used to work at Microsoft with a six-figure salary.

Where did I host my Tor exit relays? Obviously not Azure, otherwise I (who has more savings than most people) would be bankrupt.

Now I run Fourplex, have 60% less income I used to (alongside dividends) and run Tor exit relays at FP as a "customer".

    Thanks! 😘

Quite frankly, while many people dream of working for big tech, I hated working for Microsoft.

It was made worse since I was assigned a product that's basically workplace surveillance out of college and as the job market soured, I was effectively trapped there.

I had to leave. I was never the greatest coder anyways.

Running Fourplex is much more fulfilling, even if I work seven days a week and on evenings. Yes, my hours are longer but it doesn't stress me out as much, I can thrive not just barely survive.

That would be my dream of work xD, me finding myself heading to the similar path.

I would love to provide low-end IT services/products/hosts to friends & low income folks in my country & regional. Low end low effort, we both helping each other.

That work could be more fun than sitting 9-5 code for some tech bros just to made it to a milestones so they could report to some other BODs that we met goals this month are you happy to shove in more money.

This part I couldn't agree more, the fun of doing.

I work at a mid-size tech company who doesn't do as glamorous work because working for a fortune 500 was absolute balls. now i have more meaningful work and time for my hobbies...also significant less worrying about random layoffs to appease shareholders. theres a happy medium to everything

To some the command line is an enhancement not a reduction.

The word "deprecated" used here is correct.
