Storj introducing minimum charge

vitobottavitobotta Member
edited May 2025 in Providers

Not a big deal for me, as I have $25 a month in credits for five years as a thank-you for my open source work :)

I thought someone who uses Storj for small amounts of data might be interested.

What’s changing?

Starting July 1, 2025, Storj will introduce a $5 minimum monthly usage fee for all accounts. This helps cover the cost of payment processing and basic operations so we can continue offering fast, secure, and reliable storage—even for small accounts.

What does this mean for you?

If your monthly usage (storage, bandwidth, and segments) exceeds $5, nothing changes.

If your monthly usage totals less than $5, your account will be billed the $5 minimum monthly usage fee.

Don’t want to continue?

If you prefer not to be charged, you can close your account before June 30, 2025 to avoid the fee.

    nope

Well that makes my mind up for me, had used them for a long time for backstop extra backups of critical data, initially on the free tier, but didn't begrudge them a small payment when that ended. Making a minimum payment level without time constraints would have covered the processing charges.

Makes sense for them I suppose, but charging for over 1TB per month regardless won't for many small users.

For people considering switching to minio:

MinIO recently (this week) fucked the free version so much that it is pretty much useless and pushed all features to their paid tier which starts at 96,000$ a year.

Honestly not does surprise me. Website has the same vibe as RedHat. And for that reason, I'm out.

Got a link to minio blog or 3rd-party one or whereever more information on this is available (like updated feature matrix)? Only find references to AiStore on a quick search. Thanks.

  • I am using it for small backups and I guess it is time to say goodbye. Shame, I like them.

Been using storj for less than usd1 a month...need to find alternative now...

I used them once in the past. Now I'm cancelling my account with them. My card can't be removed because it's the only card in my account. Hopefully, I won't be mistakenly charged after my account has been deleted.

To be fair, they haven't put resources into the community edition and it's just a security target that does more harm than good. If someone from the community wants to step up, they don't appear to stop them. This isn't a Broadcom pulling a VMWare dick move.

It sounds like they don't have much community developers for a project like this.

Other development models would just treat Community as beta and paid as stable so they can maintain both as one codebase, so that's the more telling story about why to move away.

Damnit. I just got MinIO all setup nice last month and now this shit. Picked it over other alternatives just because of the web UI. Major waste of time and energy...
