I used to run Debian, now I have Ubuntu installed on my servers, just to have the same operating system running everywhere.

However, I find many of Canonical’s choices questionable. One example is socket-based sshd activation - I want sshd to run all the time. As a result, I often find myself disabling several features that Ubuntu handles differently from Debian, or choosing Debian-preferred software like Exim instead of Postfix.

They are always trying to blaze a way that the community rarely accepted. They lost me with snaps although that is more desktop centered than a server.

I went back to Debian and have been happy. I started there over 20 years ago. I remember thinking 'dselect' meant unselect 🤣

I wonder why OpenSUSE was quite rare to use as OS VM/server 🤔

  • i prefer debian
if resources is limited (like 128m ram and 1G disk) i will choose alpine

    Yes 😅

  • Debian to minimize resources used by the OS. Especially on small VPS systems, I want most of my RAM, disk, and CPU to be used on my applications and not by the OS (which is also why I absolutely despise Windows).

Debian is for general use, and AlmaLinux is for web hosting servers.

I've been a BSD user for over 20 years. Not a lot of providers have OpenBSD so I switched to FreeBSD, and if that isn't available I'll use Debian.

My dedicated servers are all FreeBSD (I'll do a net install if there's no image available) and the small VPS are usually debian.

It really depends on the needs. For websites or virtual machines, I usually use Ubuntu/Debian. But if it involves something like an Android emulator, then I go with Windows :)

    Almalinux > Rocky Linux > CentOS > Ubuntu > Debian :)

  • Debian ftw

  • Ubuntu, Debian rotate per major updates
