Can a LET be cheaper than Cloud Storage?

edited May 2025 in Help

I'm looking for an offsite backup storage solution instead of buying a big HDD and store somewhere else than home, I went all through the most popular and unpopular services and they all ask at least €130/y for 5 TB space.
So I'm wondering if in the LET world they's a way to get the same for much less. Of course I'm not expecting any extra feature like web UI and such. I just a need a server that can talk with TrueNAS Scale for automatic backups. They won't be accessed frequently.

It really doesn't matter since it's just a backup.

    thanks

@host_c which price range I'm looking at? For now 5 TB (expandable) is fine. I just need enough CPU/RAM to handle file backups from my NAS (TrueNAS).

I recently bought a €60/yr 5TB storage box from HostSlick (https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/205065/up-to-20gbit-storage-kvm-vps-and-dedicated-servers-deals-hostslick-at-37-yr/p1) but it is not delivered yet after 3 weeks :joy:
At €130/yr or ~$145/yr you could buy HostHatch's 10TB box at $110/yr (https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/204445/celebrating-14-years-in-business-nvme-storage-deals-inside/p1). Although you need to pay a total of $330 (3 years payment) for double storage upgrade. And then you still have some leftover to buy one of the NVMe compute VPS if you want to. Too bad that promotion just ended about a week ago, it's likely you will have to wait at least until Black Friday for another promo.

If you are looking for SFTP/rsync/similar storage box then you can probably find something cheaper, but if you’re looking for a VPS then it will be around that price range unless you can snatch some flash sale. $2-3/TB/month is a pretty good deal. Below that price point, it will have to be flash sales or Black Friday promos

Just a storage box is fine.

Do storage boxes also offer some kind of web UI access for files (to retrieve)?

  • sandrosandro Member

Any more suggestions? Host-C has no interesting offers and HostBrr coupon is not valid anymore.

Anything with DirectAdmin likely does have a file explorer as it's part of it.

Most other providers you'll need to install something for this purpose.

Obviously @host_c is my first choice, but as they do not always have active promos (like the one I purchased, 5TB for < $50/yr), maybe have a look at a few other providers as well; one who I seem to remember also does storage and generally, based on my experience, is cheap and sells decent VPS is @hosthatch.
