Botched server delivery - what compensation is fair to ask?

When i ask for a refund i get the following response : "I told you that is not something we are doing"
and then "Because the parts were ordered and we can’t get a refund on them. I can extend your time and ensure it’s online tomorrow for you.
The parts we ordered to build it aren’t refundable so we can’t"

The real issue here was on the provider side: wrong hardware and a massive delay, which made the situation unnecessarily painful to manage.

like what has been mentioned if this is only just the beginning of the business relationship then be very wary.

They are telling me you have no other option than to take the server there is no refund....

if they are giving an excuse not to refund, I think go for chargeback/paypal dispute. they've given a wrong configuration, delayed, - everything works in your favour.

The only option now is to say the name of the provider and you will see how they change their minds from being dominant to being a... :D

There's a Mexican saying: "We want to see 3 Doritos after you mention the name of the provider!"

barring any details that may support said provider, i think its fair to request a refund instead of escalating this further and bring to public light on the level of (in)competence that this not-lowend provider posseses

Edited since my shipping/config issue comment is irrelevant since OP mentioned provider and original shipping isn't a part of the problem.

Alright, since I’ve been told “a refund is not something we’re doing,” despite delivering the wrong hardware, delaying me for a month etc — I feel it’s only fair to mention the provider: PureVoltage.

    @PureVoltage care to comment

btw how is he not lowend

  • ArcArc Member, Host Rep

Just to clarify — when I mentioned "not-lowend," I wasn’t referring to the provider's quality or stature negatively. In fact, this is a fairly well-established company, which is exactly why I didn’t expect these kinds of issues to arise in the first place.

For context, I’ve been in direct communication with Ian, who has been handling the matter for me via Discord.

for now i think i will wait till monday if not will move forward here

  • Yeah just wait since it's less than a day away. If this is the first time dealing with this company, and they don't provide exactly what you ordered by tomorrow, then you will have to cut ties with them forever; hopefully peacefully with a refund but if not, you might need to chargeback as a last resort.

As far as compensation, unless you had a signed agreement with penalties laid out then you won't get any. The only thing that is possible is they could give you X free months, or a free hardware upgrade, as a sign of goodwill.

Just out of pure(voltage... heh) curiosity, how did it even come to this? I feel like those server specifications aren't difficult to acquire for a customer so I am a bit perplexed on how they scuffed this so badly?

    Hello @Arc
Just seeing this now, since you and I were the ones communicating on this I wanted to address a few things.

Firstly, PureVoltage management just issued you a full refund for the complete amount paid.

The server LTO was ordered April 15th day and Idrac details were sent to you on April 25th.
This was a custom built lease to own server which required us ordering some parts, as advised in our discussions.

Regarding the ram issue, I was only made aware Friday May 16th at 8PM when you DMed that the RAM was having issues and the raid was not as requested.
I relayed this information to our build team and promised you to have it resolved Monday morning, which you agreed would be acceptable.

PureVoltage support team and management had no idea to the troubles you faced on this build as you had not opened any support tickets addressing the issues.

We spoke a lot in DM's and you relied on me to pass along the messages regarding problems you faced. I failed to meet your expectations on this and ensure the messages were relayed properly.

I should have asked you to open tickets as well, this was my fault for not properly communicating with you and the team at PureVoltage.

All I can say is I am sorry that I let you down on this transaction.

This thread can now be closed — the issue has been resolved.
Thank you to PureVoltage for processing the refund and bringing this to a conclusion. Appreciate the support from the community as well.

Then why are we having this conversation now? Either get a full refund and move on or work it out with the provider when they do deliver.

    Hey LET,

Looking for some input from others in the industry.

I ordered a dedicated server from a provider (mid-tier, not naming them) with the following config: Xeon 2697v4, 256GB RAM, RAID 0, 4TB usable space. This was supposed to be the backend for a new region we were launching, and we even took in preorders in advance.

Unfortunately, things have gone off the rails :

-The server delivery was delayed by nearly a month

-When it finally came online, it had the wrong CPU, only 160GB RAM, and was set up in RAID despite clear instructions for no RAID

-I’ve since had to refund all preorders, lost almost all of the pre-order clients, and missed the planned launch window entirely

They’ve apologized and offered a free month of service (which is the month i paid for so i don't understand what that even means now), and are promising to sort the RAM issue now. I’ve been as patient and flexible as possible (even agreed to RAID 0 when they offered it), but the overall experience has caused real business damage.

So here's my question to the community:

In your experience, what kind of compensation is reasonable to ask for in a case like this?
Especially when the delays and misconfigurations led to actual revenue loss.

Not looking to name and shame — just want to know what’s fair to request before I escalate further.

    Thanks in advance!

    Sounds like average royalehosting experience.

I know it’s kind of trendy to be like, “if they’re using em dashes it’s from ChatGPT,” but I really wouldn’t associate em dashes with AI.

Writers have been using em dashes for the longest, and the average writer should use more punctuation.

Basically, that’s correlation not causation. They also slip in typos, so I doubt it.

Next time drop the name sooner for faster refund. Glad it worked out and remember it's YOUR money, don't tolerate bullshit.

Thanks everyone for their input here , the situation was resolved with the provider and refund was processed
Also yeh i do use a bit more of those em dashes haha

  • I don't know how this is resolved. OP talks about a month plus delay and wrong configuration and Ian mentions 10 day delivery and no wrong hardware.

    Big discrepancy in actual events.

    @TimboJones said: 10 day delivery

That thread was already marked as resolved, and the issue clearly mentioned was related to RAM and RAID.

Also, I had already flagged the CPU mismatch on the 27th after checking the iDRAC.

Would really appreciate it if we could avoid reopening closed discussions unless there's something new to add.

Not tryna sound rude btw sorry
