A very attractive offer indeed - but: not recurring and basically just bait to lure you into buying much more expensive servers, so nuh, thanks no.

OP's question isn't that easy to answer IMO due to many related issues, basically boiling down to "how many and which corners do you want to get cut?" as the @MassiveGrid $0.5/mo clusterfuck so amply demonstrates ...

For me personally my most liked super-cheapie is my Virmach $9/yr VPS which of course is low on resources but performs quite well and has been quite reliable over the years. The major minus is that they change IPs from time to time (about every 2 or 3 years).

Other cheap VPS I have and like a lot is AlphaVPS / @AlexBarakov which makes up for its old-ish E5v2 processor by having 2 vCores, it's also super-reliable and comes with ample space (128 GB) on a really decent SSD and very decent connectivity, albeit a bit low on traffic (1 TB).
Also my zerocloud (what's their username here?) VPS with 3 vCores, my @Chunkserve VPS with 4 vCore and 4 GB memory and plenty traffic volume and good connectivity for just 20 €-bucks/yr and of course my @xHosts VPS. They're all cheap and really worth every cent they cost.

Honorable mentions for @Hosteroid and @hosthatch who offer decent VPS for a good price.

And of course @host_c whose storage VPS offers insane value for an insanely low price!

A very attractive offer indeed - but: not recurring and basically just bait to lure you into buying much more expensive servers, so nuh, thanks no.

While I understand the need for infinitely recurring deals, 12 months is still a lot of time. A lot of the providers who offer recurring sub $10/y deals, I highly doubt will be around for more than the next 2-3 years, makes recurring deals pointless. There are downsides to both of them, whichever you choose is up to your priorities and what risks you're willing to tolerate.

As for the other point, I don't think it's a bait to lure you in, because you (or OP in this case) doesn't want to spend money to begin with. Such a tactic wouldn't work out anyway. BUT, obviously, if you decide in the future that you want to expand whatever project you're operating, you have a wide selection of enterprise tooling in your hand, without being forced to use them. I take this as a plus, and not a bait attempt.

I don't get some of the complaints about a yearly deal being non-recurring, I recently purchased a server VPS it's pretty decent $5 a year, normal prices $10 a year so even if you renewed it at the second year that's basically $15 for 2 years, what is there to complain about

I get your point but disagree to some degree.

    • the mentioned tencent deal obviously is bait, they are - quite realistically! - betting on customers forgetting about it (or not noticing) being non-recurring but already using the VM for something, so rather than saying thanks no and leaving they'll eat the worm and pay a much higher price.
    • while I agree to some degree that providers offering super-cheap deals often have a short life-time there actually are some who don't go belly up. My super-cheap Virmach thingy is a good example. Also note that offering such deals can be a good way for new providers to gain visibility. I myself have more than once purchased a normal price VPS from a relatively new provider after having a good experience with their super-cheap "market opener" VPS, especially when they played honestly (e.g. not giving you crap but a small but decent VPS) and offered good support.

I didn't complain. I simply stated that tencents (about) $10/year deal obviously is bait. Besides my (limited - for a reason) experience with chinese large companies hasn't been exactly great ...

But I get your point and yes, that's a valid POV.

    Just create a Revolut account.

Should be a few european fintech where you can easily open account and get a card: Revolut (as mentioned above), N26, Wise, etc.

The deal with L.E.T. is that certain providers are very prominent for a while, do a bunch of offers, and then they seemingly disappear. I've got quite a few VPS's and most of them are from L.E.T. providers/advertisers that no longer advertise much here, like Greencloud.

You basically just take a chance on what ya see at present, and some work out and some don't. If you find one you like, get more from them (but don't put all your eggs in one basket).
