Free VM

JstTanJstTan Member

Hello everyone! I just heard from a friend about Oracle Free VM. It looks quite promising and interesting for me, as I always up for free hosting and offers.

I would like to ask, if the VM is good? Are there any conditions, or any restrictions to that? Is it actually free for life? What is the experiences from this community with it? And is it recommended?

I can also looking for free resources if you guys know or can recommend any.

    Oh yess
Oracle free tier is a great option to get in touch with the large cloud providers.
Upgraded from free tier to pay as you go.

I have some VMs in Sydney.
    The network is really amazing

Support , to be honst not really exist also for pay as you go.

I've been using their free AMD instance and it's been a year without downtime. I haven't been able to get my hands on their Ampere instances due to availability. I have a couple questions.
Does switching to pay as you go improve availability? Also, what costs should I expect to pay by doing so? (i.e. traffic costs, storage, etc.)

I've heard it's great, if you're able to sign up, I haven't been able to.

@JstTan said: Are there any conditions, or any restrictions to that?

    Yes, don't idle it. https://docs.oracle.com/en-us/iaas/Content/FreeTier/freetier_topic-Always_Free_Resources.htm#compute__idleinstances

And there's some regions you should avoid as they're always out of stock (I can't remember which), IIRC you can't change region after making an account either.

@JstTan said: Is it actually free for life?

Well they can terminate it whenever they feel like it.

These days it’s incredibly hard to get a free account approved, and as always, they can terminate an account on a whim, so I would suggest not trusting it with anything remotely important. Mine has been working since 2022 without issues, though.

For one, they terminate accounts based on absolutely nothing. Also worth noting that the ARM instances are perpetually out of stock so you are stuck with low performance AMD instances. TLDR: fine for learning, testing or personal use but i would not use them in production under any circumstances

Well not only Oracle, but almost any sort of services/websites I used, can and always terminate account on a whim. I am planning to do backups just in case anyway, and will be using my own domain.

Do we needed to get approval to sign up?!

  • To be honest it has the longest uptime I've seen on all my servers. But not knowing when it'll be terminated or killed, I pretty much idle it and don't put anything important on it.

    Created and destroyed multiple times.

Yes. After switching to PAYG there won't be any availability limitation and you can start Ampere instances right away. That being said, I've heard cases of Oracle account being terminated after requesting to upgrade to PAYG. In short, YMMV.

    @eguo said:
Also, what costs should I expect to pay by doing so? (i.e. traffic costs, storage, etc.)

Switching to PAYG model doesn't generate cost by itself. There won't be any cost if you still use the same free-tier servers. That being said, if you account is hacked and was used to buy none-free-tier servers, then the cost can quickly grow out of control.

Could be, though they seem to be pretty random. When it comes to Oracle, everything can be YMMV. If people think this 1961 days of uptime means it's production-level, think twice :/

I'd much rather pay for a VM than constantly worry about it getting nuked by Oracle or when will the free tier limits be changed without me knowing.

When you get the free tier, you obviously aren't entitled to the same SLA that payg users are.

Most others would terminate account if you break ToS, but not Oracle; they would do it just for fun. No warning, no notification, no way to appeal. It’ll just be gone as if it never existed.

    This.

I've tried to sign up multiple times with my one and only credit card I use daily. They refuse to help or tell me why I'm failing their checks (despite the fact that it says I need to contact support).

Their VPS is rock solid with great uptime :) I love it.
I have been using it for a long time without any major issue.
But was really hard to create an account, and grab a free resources. They always rejected my valid card (don't know why), and when succeeded, they where always 'out of free resources' at my chosen region. But it was a few years ago. So it was a long way for me but after it I can say: "it worth it".

Depends on the card issuer I guess. I managed to register first try a few years ago with my only credit card. One of my friends with a different bank got in first try as well, about 2 weeks ago.

Well I've tried both visa platinum and my everyday MasterCard (that has some very nice rewards) and Oracle said no every time.
