Pay special note to what Alyx mentioned there, that's the key. It's necessary to start with what your hosting requirements are with game-servers. The requirements for games vary "MASSIVELY". An FPS may be suitable on any run of the mill VDS, or maybe even a VPS if the usage is very low.
A survival game on the otherhand might require a pretty bleeding edge Ryzen (not an EPYC or HEDT Intel) to even run playable. --- High clockspeeds.
In all cases, you have to be careful on what's considered abuse. Typical VPS provider will get upset if you're using more than 10% of a core sustained and not under burst-load.
IMO, if game-servers, you probably want to stick to a VDS exclusively. It's not unrealistic to (like with the survival games bit) need 50$+ a month for a game-server on a VDS {e.g, if you need 4 cores, 8-16GB of RAM}, at which point you might also want to consider dedicated servers too from a budget stance.
