Windows 2025 Why does the remote desktop connection freeze?

Hello, I'm struggling with a problem, I have a vps on windows 2025 server and it is activated, and when I log in from remote desktop, it seems like the login screen is frozen.
But if I restart the vps, it works.
But all windows server versions worked perfectly 2019, 2016 but 2025 osbe what could be the problem?
It seems like it is doing energy saving, but it doesn't do anything. Only after reboot.
I looked at all the screen switching, everything but everything is turned off.
But if I log in again 2 hours later, the login is not frozen yet, and then it only does this after 6-7 hours.

Then you are probably oom or similar. Ask the host.

Previous versions are comparably low resource hungry compared to 2025. So remember that.

    What are specs?

Check with host if vps is being shutting down and what could be the reason

If you have updated the it recently, then this may cause it. We had to uninstall latest cumulative update and that fixed the freezing issue, unfortunately i don't recall which cumulative update number was it but think of 2025-02, the latest update on March 27 2025-03 seems to have fixed that issue. if not, it might the host node is out of RAM.

I had this exact problem, it lasted a month or two, and it seems to have gone away on its own. Scoured the logs and could never find the root cause! It was so bad that I turned my Win25 servers off when they weren't absolutely needed and started them before remoting in.

  • Sounds like a classic case of the server going into some sleep mode or energy-saving funk after a while, check those settings again or see if there are any updates that could help out.

It's probably because of a feature (Connect Time Detect and Continuous Network Detect) introduced in Windows 11 that is carried over to Server 2025 too.

    Hi,

    should be fixed with that:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Connections -> Select network detection on the Server to enabled.

  • Thank you, updating didn't help, unfortunately I'll try what you wrote now, thank you.
