lets end it with a bang

u can close it now @FAT32

  • If I won something (that too by any sort of luck), it's totally rigged!

@onidel - thanks for the gesture.

I've actually not really been around this thread much at all, and I don't think I deserve to be a winner in that sense.

Would it be OK if we could have a top 15 (or 20) posters in this thread (minus @Smigit and any other winners who DID win something) have a duck race and the winner gets my credit instead?

@beanman109 or @allthemtings - do you think you could run no-so-rigged duck race and pick a whiner? Maybe even have 3-5 duck races and the final race with the whiners from each of the races?

Anything works as long as it's fun for the rest.

    Thank you!

    Planning for smthing

    General use:
.cc, .cx, .party, .xyz (the $1 god send) and some cheap cTLD like .de, .nl

    Dev:
    .dev, .run, .pw

    Sharing ISO:
    .su, .ru, .st, .cn

.nl .de i already hav 1

.cc .cx .party .dev .run .pw .st

    Rich!

After the renewal period only 2 of em will left 😂

I miss the day when domainname.shop was cheap

I have some free domains from Freenom, including .ga, .cf, and .gq! I also have 3 .top domains, 10+ numeric .xyz domains, some free subdomains, one .icu, and one .me. These are all retainable with minimal cost. Unfortunately, I haven't found a domain combination that truly resonates with me yet. Perhaps "bocchi" suits me for now, but in the end, I still need to get a .com.🤣

    i think i had 1 or 2 eu.org that i doesn't put it to use yet :#

i thought you had to expose the fuck out of urself to get most european domains including .eu
how are u guys all getting these things anon

eu.org is free for people tho

everytime i add european domains in porkbun i see this and it scares me
    this one was for .de

Different EU countries interpret GDPR differently, but as for Sweden for example, if a domain is registered by an indivudual and not a company, basically all personal information is redacted from the registry.

This wasn’t the case a few years ago but many EU countries including Sweden (Internetstiftelsen) decided that personal information being public in WHOIS isn’t compatible with GDPR, hence, no need to proxy register.

    Not all EU countries.

.no is the same. Individuals - at most - have their email exposed, but I know at least Domeneshop / Domainnameshop supports hiding it.

considering i signup to 97% of things with my [email protected] email this is a bit concerning to me

    they got ur back tho

After having my email leaked about 6 billion times, I started using addy.io with custom domain, so for me it doesn't matter too much. Just annoying to get "helo we help with seo plz reply"

Im really conflicted with the custom domain thing. I was really close to buying AnonAddy or Simplelogin, then got stuck between two. Then I considered self hosting which also sounds like PITA.

Then I was like maybe I should go with some privacy focused EU mail provider (the new fancy thing now).

But I am all lost, also telling my email as ...randomshit...@gmail.com is easier than [email protected] for others to understand.

Edit: turns out < > tags are stripped

I used to use addy.io's official instance, but some emails just ended up in the void when going via them (and it was not on my end).

What I've done now is self-host addy.io, then setup MXRoute (wildcard email) as a backup MX (lower priority). Of course, the only "problem" with that is that email from providers that use MXRoute too will just end up in the MXRoute inbox.

I wanna mention that I specifically use a subdomain for this. So instead of [email protected] it's something like [email protected] instead.

Personally I like the flexibility it gives to move services when I occasionally choose to. Moved from Google Workspace when they dropped the activesync (push mail) protocol late last year to Fastmail. Took a while to copy emails over, but actually dealing with the addresses was about 15 minutes to update DNS and recreate half a dozen alias. Didn’t have to notify anyone or do anything more. Very clean.

If you’re going to stay with gmail then yeah, @gmails the go and you can’t use a custom domain anyway. I’d get a custom domain if entertaining any of those privacy focused mail providers or what not. If you change your mind and/or find the limitations placed on the service to achieve the privacy too limiting, getting outs easier. Also smaller companies can fold. Saw what happened to Skiff last year as an example. OnMail is another recent casualty. Rather pay $10 a year than face the prospect of having to update dozens, or in my case 100’s, of addresses....and that’s assuming the services using the address even lets me change it.

i'm customer of simplelogin since before the acquisition, i used to used proton, but never really directly paid to them

i was looking for alternatives too but have to say, for the best QOL proton is numba 1 but the others things else is not that gud anymore

    Any gud cheap tld?

So instead of [email protected] it's something like [email protected] instead.

    speaking of delivery rate

i think i used to self-hosted during my OVH era

but since i got a recurring discount from them, i ditch the self-hosted email since then

The reason FastMail isnt encouraged (at least as I read) is it's in one of the Five eye countries. I also heard FastMail has really good spam filtering.

I want to move away from Google indeed, but I need a solid plan, as changing email addresses is way harder than changing providers especially over the years.

  • Echoing what others have said, thanks @onidel for the promotion. Got a few 80 and 90% services so did alright, and the $15 at the end there. So thanks. Also thanks @beanman109 for the duck races you organised.

Time to hit the hay for me anyway. Take care all
