You’re right, it's a storage box, but they do provide a 2-email account limit with sending capped at 30/day (max 200). However, my account doesn’t have it enabled. They also offer Softaculous Pro, but without SMTP configured, making email alerts useless. I think they should at least enable it for system alerts.

It is a oversight that system notifications aren't being sent. That will be resolved.

As correctly pointed out, this is not a e-mail service and was never advertised as such. The e-mail accounts are non-functional and will not be an added feature.

Thanks for your response. However, if the email accounts are entirely non-functional, then what is their intended purpose? What is the email manager for? Many features, like Softaculous, are included without explicit advertisement, so why make an exception for email?

Email is a necessary service, even with just two accounts. It plays a crucial role in system notifications, password resets, and service alerts—things that directly impact usability. Moreover, the system already has predefined limits: a maximum of 2 email accounts, a daily sending limit of 30 emails, and an overall limit of 200 emails. If these limits exist, they were clearly intended for some level of functionality.

Since these two email accounts are officially part of the offering, it would be reasonable not to disable them entirely. Even if this isn't meant to be a full-fledged email service, enabling basic functionality for system alerts would ensure smoother operations.

Yes, It has DirectAdmin with it's robust Email Manager with only two email accounts maximum creation limit with this 1TB storage Box. ScreenShots as DailyLimitSettings, EmailAccounts, Limit Warning.

I tried this and create One more email account over to it's default email account which created during purchased.

But here is a big problem these emails are not working not for incoming nor outgoing. After this try, I ask to resolve this problem to HostBrr, then they replied me as:

    Now? What to do?

E-mailing was a consideration when creating the packages thus accounts have been created with this, however DirectAdmin seems to be unhappy when removing the feature from existing packages thus it has remained.

E-mailing was decided to not be included as it would not be sustainable. It not only requires maintenance, additional support for users but it is also another cost. Any service that costs less than $10/year is also a prime target for abusive clients, whereas a large part of this is usually e-mail related. The majority of our support tickets related to standard hosting packages, which includes e-mail, is related to clients having issues setting this up. The only reason that these Storageboxes can be offered at this cost, which is very low margin as it is, is due to the very hands off approach. A robust set of limited features where little should require support.

Clients are free to use any SMTP service to send e-mails through but it will not be supported on these packages.

I understand that StorageBoxes are meant to be hands-off, but if certain features are included, shouldn’t they at least be configured properly? A few key concerns:

1️⃣ SMTP for the Entire Account? – Since email is not supported, how can I configure a single SMTP setup at the account level to work for all applications, including Softaculous, Nextcloud, and other scripts? Manually entering SMTP everywhere is inefficient.

2️⃣ Softaculous Notifications – You've acknowledged system notifications should work, but nothing has changed for 81 days. Is there a plan to implement basic system alerts via Softaculous?

3️⃣ ## Nextcloud Incompatibility – This is a StorageBox, but even a widely used storage-focused tool like Nextcloud throws errors due to PHP OPcache misconfiguration. Errors include:

    opcache_get_status() returns false
    opcache.max_accelerated_files too low
    opcache.memory_consumption insufficient
    opcache.restrict_api blocking Nextcloud updates
If this service is meant for storage-related applications, why aren’t these configurations optimized by default?

4️⃣ General Inaction – According to a system benchmark, the server uptime is 81 days, yet nothing has been done regarding Softaculous email notifications or these compatibility issues. Are there any concrete plans to address them, or should users expect no improvements?

I fully appreciate the low-cost nature of these boxes, but if features like Softaculous, email accounts, and PHP environments are present yet non-functional or poorly configured, it leads to unnecessary confusion. If there are workarounds, please provide guidance rather than just saying it’s not supported.

Dude dgar obviously this service isn't for you.. btw Nextcloud still functions even with those errors. I got the same but since its working I'm not throwing a hissy fit for 2TB $30/yr.

Basically he's been open about what this is - it's a large storage ssh and sftp service. He's using DA because it's a low touch and easy way to set up ssh/ftp users.

Anything beyond that that you can get to work is a bonus, including any and all shared hosting perks that you perceive you are entitled to.

    1. You can't. E-mail included or not you would still need to configure all your services with the proper SMTP settings.

    2. No one has raised a ticket about this. I am only aware of the issue since I kept a eye on this thread. If no one reports issues then it will not get fixed.

    3. They were initially configured but a update broke some settings. It is WIP to be resolved. It is not critical and can be ignored, it is simply performance optimizations and as far as I know there aren't any performance issues.

    4. As above.

What would a good backup solution be for pulling from multiple servers? I see rsync is intalled in the ssh on my box but I never used it like this.

Or would pushing from the servers to the box through sftp be better for customization and encryption?

By the way, due to PHP settings errors, office programs such as OnlyOffice and Collabora Online do not work in NextCloud.
If anyone has managed to solve this problem, please share your experience.
The PHP command line for running occ.php also does not work normally in ssh.

I guess it depends how you manage customers' expectations (and yours as well).

  • OP should get a VPS instead

    occ works fine for me.

Re: office, latest version of OnlyOffice app doesn’t work with embedded Community Document server not because of php settings but just because it’s a known issue and doesn’t work. Haven’t tried onlyoffice with a remote document server but I’m sure it would work fine. Haven’t messed with Collobora but I definitely wouldn’t try to install it on the storagebox/shared hosting because it’s all server side (vs client side for OO) and a lot more resource intensive for the server..

  • I was considering nextcloud but changed my mind. I think if you want a proper NC, you should utilize VPS/dedi. I am using my hostbrr storage box with rclone and it is working great. You can also connect it to your nextcloud as a network storage.

  • I use mine with rclone to sync some data between servers.
I even made a small bashscript around rclone to simplify moving data to and from it that I call 'brrclone'. More proud of the name than the code, to be honest.

So your nextcloud data lives on an rclone mount? Any symlink issues etc?

No, no, I tried various combinations (including hosted hetzner) and ended up with Nextcloud on VPS + S3 storage bucket connected to it. Hostbrr is purely for rclone storage.

  • Since everyone here is experienced and confident about HostBrr’s StorageBox, let’s take it to the next level.

HostBrr’s StorageBox isn’t just another storage solution! They are now offering DirectAdmin-powered storage boxes for those who don’t need a full VPS but require high-capacity, cost-effective storage. These boxes run on AMD EPYC 7502 CPUs, DDR4 ECC RAM, and NVMe-cached HDDs—perfect for backups, large-scale website hosting, and more without the hassle of managing a VPS.

    Hostbrr's wordings:

"However, that is not the only new thing! HostBrr is now also offering DirectAdmin storage boxes, for those of you who do not need a VPS and just need a lot of storage for cheap! These storage boxes are hosted on AMD EPYC 7502 CPUs, DDR4 ECC RAM and fast NVMe cached HDD! These are perfect for backup storage, hosting your websites with large storage needs and so on without worrying about managing a VPS."

With that in mind, I’ve compiled 50+ possible use cases for these storage boxes. Given that they come fully loaded with Softaculous, Redis, ModSecurity, ClamAV, SSH, WordPress Manager, and more, I’m curious:

👉 Who here has pushed these storage boxes beyond basic storage and backups?

Since everyone here is experienced and confident about HostBrr’s StorageBox, let’s take it to the next level.

Can I use Hostbrr StorageBox to store scheduled backup of the sites I have on Hostbrr cPanel Webhosting?
    If so, how?
Is Softaculous (FTP method) on cPanel an option?

  • My backups work fine 👍 with HostBrr cPanel and HostBrr StorageBox (both have Terminal for using SSH and Rsync).

So, I use SSH + Rsync + Cron Jobs. You can also use FTP with Rclone.

  • Thanks for sharing, it helped a lot!

  • I'm too stupid to use it for automated backups of a full vps so it's idling for me, like almost every service I bought
