Jar saves the day, MyW to continue (WAS MyW is closing doors)

As much as it would be lovely to keep MyW going it's probably best to disperse. I'm mostly against lifetime offers but it seems that the price was way too low to begin with, and if people are using a lot of storage (probably abusing some sort of clause in the ToS/AuP I'm sure) it would be a bit of a mess to sort out.*
People are going to be unhappy whether the business closes, whether they're told to pay more, or whether they're told to leave because of x,y or z in the Terms of Service.
Thanks Jar for keeping the dream alive.
*Based on speculation.
Reducing everyones quota by 50% should solve it permanently. I wouldnt mind and am sure most dont
If you are looking to allow people to migrate, I would be happy to open up some offers and offer migrations of data onto the 20i platform that I use and have been running a few offers on of late, if you wanted to let me know the most common size of plans (shared) only I will be happy to work from that
Time for MyW refugee offers?
When It was first announced before Jar stepped in I offered some free accounts but happy to listen to what people want and have a reasonable discussion on people's wants and needs and create something fair and reasonable, maybe offer some incentive details too
"Oh look Jarland freed up a couple hundred GBs on the primary partition of WDE1... don't mind if I do!" - Someone that'll take me hours to find with the server running prod with the pedal to the floor at the same time
Fixed, again. Who would run a CDN that logs so much traffic you'd think it was Cloudflare itself, on MyW shared hosting? That's like Google deciding to migrate Gmail to MXroute.
Yeah.. bad eggs. MyW? More like MyWayToAbuseSystemResourcesForFree
Now I get it. Holy fuck. I guess they signed up in September of last year so probably hadn't hit Mike's radar yet. This user generates over 1TB of web server logs like it's nothing. I free up 200+GB and like 12 hours later they've eaten it up.
Posing as a CDN they're using WDE1 as a staging ground for wonderful activities such as: Instructing their botnet of compromised Wordpress installations to inject code dynamically from their "CDN" (WDE1) which instructs the visiting client of the compromised site to load their target website once (or 10 times?) per page load, which creates a large scale L7 DDOS attack against their target using residential and business IPs from across the world that aren't even part of the botnet. Fucking genius.
Fuck shared hosting.
It would be kind of cool if someone took it over and made all plans monthly recurring.
And did some quality control of users.
Honestly, a clean slate is a better starting position. There's not really any value on leveraging this this as opposed to simply starting a shared hosting provider.
The only value would be the help for those who recently bought lifetime plans (not sure how many such users there are) - to avoid misunderstanding - I don't count myself among those.
But as a low end (shared) hosting provider with many long term and lifetime deals sold, I expect whoever takes it over (if anyone does) will be in for a good amount of bad vibes, and not earning any profits (probably losing money on top of spending time).
I appreciate what you tried to do, and it's great that people have time to migrate.
Thinking out loud:
Online stuff is volatile. You can't just pre-pay (regardless of the amount) and expect stuff to remain online for the next 10, not to mention 20 or 50 years. Not even the static HTML stuff.
Providers and servers change hands, owners, policies.
So, even if you paid more than a reasonable price, it's not a realistic expectation.
With that in mind, and considering how it was started and run, MyW lasted quite a long time and many users did get a great value for the money. Yes, it's sad for how it ended for Mike and the more recent users. What you did hopefully eased that at least to a degree.
Stay cool - live long & prosper

P.S.
Not enough time, nor linux server maintenance experience to offer much meaningful help. Which makes me appreciate what you did even more.
I guess you could also make it a non-profit organisation, staff from here getting involved for free, small servers supported for free if possible by some datacenters, all with hosting plans offered for money which transparently goes to a charity selected by "customers" every month.
I don't know... just trying to brainstorm it. It is easy to delete, it is harder to create.
It is his fault
If this would not be jar, people would be outrageous...
I would also be interested in MyW servers and licenses. If "we" were to take over the service together, I would immediately introduce a "server maintenance bridging fee" of 30 cents per month per user (resellers from $1.50), but only for lifetime customers. This would be a kind of "server community" with multiple volunteer administrators.
Based on my estimates and assumptions, this fee would easily cover the server costs. And such a small amount wouldn’t be a burden "on anyone’s" wallet. I think this would be a good compromise. It’s something worth considering.
I sincerely apologize for the extra uptime, won’t happen again.
I think it’s best that people get their data removed rather than passed on again. I don’t think playing hot potato with people’s data nets positive results overall. It does suck for people who purchased a lifetime plan toward the end of them, but I can’t allow myself to get too caught up in that. It’s not any more fair to them that I’m giving them my bare minimum with no end to it in sight.
Yes this is the right way. I have a lifetime account. I'll need to move my data but please just close it, don't sell it to someone else. PII needs to be handled with greater care and not sold.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Thank you for giving people time to migrate and keeping this sinking ship alive for so long! You're a good lad
thank you jar. You have done enough
The reason why I have sites on the sinking ship, is because it runs smooth as butter when it is running, better than namecrane. Don't know why but namecrane hosting throws frequent errors. Mike has magic hands and the server config was perfect. Wouldn't mind paying premium with the same config.
Thanks @Jar for all the hard work, a very kind gesture and a heads up that you didn't really need to give.
I've moved domains + data out, thank you MyW (& Miguel when he ran the ship).
I can understand why some folk are reluctant to "let go and move on". Unfortunately, looks like, Party's over. Maybe a pub or two down the street is still open. Need to head out to explore.
weird for me name crane was smooth, so I even recommended them [I have the SG one
]
We appreciate that. Nobody likes having their data passed on to some unknown entity.
Also, would you consider @agxl suggestion or is a shutdown confirmed? If so, any estimated time for the shutdown (I know you mentioned that there will be ample time to move away, just looking for an estimate)?
Thanks
I don't know if this is easily done with WHMCS but if you can mass set all lifetimes to Recurring (like a year plus or w.e) in the database the cancellation option should appear so clients can terminate automatically, reduce the server load as time goes by and maybe even free up a server for discontinuation before the full closure if you're lucky. At the very least it might help the load from all the backups as I know I couldn't cancel mine automatically as it was set to one time. Just a thought that you didn't ask for.
I appreciate the kind words, really do! :-)
@jar can you please let us know the estimated shutdown time? I will have to move my remaining accounts.
He said he'd announce it soon, and give plenty of notice. I'm not sure badgering the guy keeping all your stuff online, for free, is the most productive use of the internet.
It would be cool if @jar would do something with it, i'm a mxroute client so i know quality, but if not, i don't think anyone can be upset for a guy stepping up for everyone, this downtime is not jar's fault, he did say no support, no complaints, no guarantees...
I’d like to emphasize once again that there seems to be a misunderstanding here. The potential "takeover" does not mean purchasing user data.
First of all, MyW (WNDP - WebNegócio Lda.) is a Portuguese company and therefore subject to the strict European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This means a standard acquisition would be "nearly impossible" for legal reasons related to data protection.
My idea was simply to cover the server costs through a "server maintenance bridging fee" paid by the remaining customers. These customers would have to actively agree to this; otherwise, their accounts would be terminated and deleted. A contract could be drafted to clearly define these terms, while MyW would retain control. Additionally, multiple volunteer administrators would help reduce @MikePT Miguel's workload.
This would turn into a "server community" or a "cost-sharing server." Since starting everything from scratch would be much more complicated, it makes sense to build upon what Miguel has already created. There are likely still existing license and provider contracts that would be far more expensive if signed today.
I’m interested in this, and I believe there are others in the community who would be as well. It wouldn’t generate any profit — at least not yet — but who needs profit anyway.
So, I would be willing to work something out. If you, @jar, @MikePT, etc., are interested, feel free to contact me.
