Holy smokes. Now I understand why @Advin name it as Singapore Metro. That location goes OOS once buyers notice it's Singapore. I guess JB is just not as good as SG yeah?

It was OOS even before the rebrand (with the exception of 1-2 plans which came from cancellations). But yes, it helps clear up confusion. Some of our IP ranges are also geolocated to Singapore, so it helps there too.

There should be a new naming in the future but to be fair there's a "Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ)" agreement but naming it Singapore Metro is incorrect :joy:

I remember there used to be a host naming it: Singapore City, Malaysia and it triggered me a little bit

"Singapore Area" would probably be more accurate. At checkout, there is a disclaimer that it is located in Equinix JH1.

I actually don't think there's anything wrong naming it Johor, Malaysia. In fact that would be special because it is harder to find than Singapore... I just hope it is slightly cheaper, will wait for the day you offer $0.25/GB

(Pi Day (Today)? Easter? Malaysia Independence Day?) :D

I mean, yes and no. Naming it Singapore helps because some customers out there don't necessarily know what Johor is and where it's located on the map, so they think that there's some difference in the network between Singapore and Johor, even though there is none. We had one particular customer in tickets fight at length about how they wanted to be moved to Singapore since they thought it would result in a significant latency reduction, even though this is not correct because we backhaul our traffic (<1ms) back to Singapore anyway.

It's also why there are many providers who label Secaucus, NJ or Piscataway, NJ, as New York City Metro. The difference between Piscataway and New York City is nearly double the distance between Johor and Singapore. In addition, we are looking at launching a PoP in Singapore directly, mostly as a network PoP, but it'll likely have some VPS services. In that case, we'd strongly prefer having them combined under one location.

Of course, there will be a disclaimer at checkout about which particular datacenter the service will be deployed in. We hope to do some cheap deals in MY/SG in the future and bring the pricing down to what it is in the United States.

Among the two locations, some hosts have made a choice.

  • @advinservers Hi Advin,

I know that you are busy with migrate and the promotion; however, can you get back to me regarding ticket #319235? It has been wayssss pass the initial 4 weeks estimate for my custom dedi and I yet to receive invoice or ETA. I have timeline to meet for multiple migrations so at least give me ETAs for this one, please!?
