Mailbird made lifetime licenses invalid for version 3.0

bobertbobert Member
edited March 2025 in General

So I bought mailbird lifetime a while ago due to all the people here recommending it to be used along with mxroute.

Today I installed it on a new computer just to find out that my lifetime license is invalid.

Apparently after releasing 3.0, mailbird made all previous lifetime licenses invalid last year. They are now selling another lifetime license for $150 and lifetime upgrade for $69 additional. Needless to say, I don't think anyone can trust any lifetime offer they have anymore.

Anyone here still using mailbird or know of a better alternative?

Ah yes, the great "lifetime for this release" deal...

  • It's supposed to be lifetime for all updates, not just the release.

I don't mind staying on an old version, but the installer downloads the files remotely. There's no way to guarantee the ability to install the old version if they decide to take the files down from their server.

  • At least for the time being they are still providing an official installer for Mailbird 2: https://goto.getmailbird.com/mb2 (can be found on the downloading page if you scroll a bit down: https://www.getmailbird.com/downloading/)

Doesn't seem you can keep some sort of official "offline installer" though, sadly.

I read that some people said the updater, updates it to v3.0 behind the scenes so 2.0 installer might not be the solution.

    Ah, of course.

Yeah, I haven't actively used Mailbird in a while. Only tested the Mailbird 2 installer and verified my license still worked on that.

Stupid if they force you to upgrade to v3 through an update.

  • Useless shit

Contact them, maybe they will convert your license. Scammy company imo

Nah I downloaded 2.0 and its working for me. But people on reddit said they took the files down temporarily so it wasn't working before. I'm looking for alternatives now because it'll probably be gone the next time I reinstall.

I don't mind paying monthly but all I need is multi-account email. None of this AI bullshit. So the prices are a bit insane, I'd pay like $10/year max. Thunderbird UI is terrible.

  • Mac user here. Had been using Postbox but it was sold and dev to cease. While looking at alternatives I came across Mailbird and a lot of people quite annoyed at this very thing. In the end ‘em Client’ looks like it may be the closest replacement.

Bit exy to buy that one. However, if you sign up with CraneMail you do get access to a license for ‘em Client’ as part of the Smartermail offering. If you’re so inclined to drop the $69 for Cranemails lifetime plan, or a smaller annual one, that could be an option. I did confirm with the em client dev that you can also convert that license to a lifetime for a price (should you cancel crane mail) that’d be lower than buying on its own.

Note that while it looked like the best option I came across, I’m yet to use it a stack as I tend to gravitate towards webmail.

  • Been using Edison Mail for years and I still like it. I use the free edition and it is more than sufficient.

I don't trust you not to trust you

  • A "lifetime" license that isn't actually for life and requires further payment makes trusting them with sensitive emails unthinkable.

OllyDbg or x64dbg may be an alternative… if you can handle it.

Occasionally tried or at least had a closer look at different email clients. The only one I liked enough to pay about $10 for was Batmail. But that was before world war 1 and in a Windows office setting I disliked.
Thunderbird I disliked from the first moment I saw it. I generally don't like stuff that looks like a playground for children (same with electronics TME).

Somewhat later, I guess not too long before world war 2, I came across Sylpheed Mail and a bit later Claws mail (a Sylpheed fork IIRC) and never again looked for another email client. Yes, it has some minor quirks but once properly configured it works nice and reliably.

And I generally try to stay away from apps, tiles, and similar nonsense. I prefer programs, preferably open source but if a program offers real value (as opposed to eye candy or being considered cool on reddit) and works reliably I'm willing to pay.

And yes, I do miss OS/2.
