Very belated response but I was in the search for a VPS in Perth. Perth doesn't really have many VPS providers due to the smaller populous (hence low demand). And being the most isolated capital city*, connections to other locations are tough. Getting a server in Melbourne and Sydney is suitable with a latency of <40ms and ~50ms respectively, but those locations are also not cheap. I have multiple clients in Perth who experience a ping of >200ms for connections to my Singapore VPS (I thought terrible routing is at play here but asking them for a traceroute says otherwise).
@BinaryLane offers plans that are actually economical in Perth, starting at ~AUD$4 (inc. GST)
As to respond to you primary statement, I don't think it's too ironic that GC lacks an Australian location, nor do I see it in the near future; it's definately not a high priority for them due to the less economical nature for low end providers. That said, @hosthatch offers generously priced deals for their Sydney VPS (especially during sales).
Any other good low end providers in Australia?
