When a pawn reaches the end of the chessboard it can be promoted. The player can choose to promote the pawn to one of the following pieces:
Queen (most common choice), Rook, Bishop or Knight
The pawn is then replaced with the chosen piece, and the game continues with that new piece in play. This promotion happens regardless of how many pawns are already on the board.
The white pawn goes to e8 to promote to a knight. Checkmate.
